Most all of the "issue" types like this i have seen have the same type finish similar to frosting , and was plated or washed . Silver badges in silver could be ordered at companys who made awards for private purchase, but like blood wings to paratroopers in WW2, the issue badge would likely be the one worn if any in combat, and yet still cherished (also they were cheaper to replace or lose)

I like the front details , we see less good badges of the issue type now surfacing , and I haven'tseen any hollowbacks ever marked , anywhere on pin or badge. The ones you have to watch out for are the marked type privately purchased . This type is MY favorite , and most of them were snagged by allied soldiers whenever possible . I give it a thimbs up. IMO.
      !.

Again, I am familiar with the position that that stamped badges are "issue/award" and that the others are private purchase. This may be true, but one thing that I KNOW is also true is that many, many of the stamped badges were made after 1918 (I know of quite a few Juncker made examples that have evidence from owners dating them to the 1930s for instance as well as other types of post WWI stamped badges.....that were not made as award pieces) and I know of many wartime pilot photos showing the wear of what are clearly 800 silver cut out crown hollow two piece badges....and a number of these with solid attribution as wartime worn badges......

Personally I'm really as comfortable with most types of higher quality badges (maybe they are private purchas maybe not) as I am with the stamped types in terms of being wartime badges and even in terms of them being orignal badges as both types have been faked....and I can detect most types of fakes of hollow muti'piece badges easier than I can a stamped badge.

Most Important thing now is that he snags the badge, and we can sweat the theorys later...right?

I do know they made transitional badges for Vets who joined the TR and were involved in the various flying organizations to replace lost badges they earned , even before they had planes.

I believe I have a badge of that type also, but it doesn't have any maker mark but there may be something on the pin. (possibly an M or a W)

I really like the hollow backs like these , as you will see what seems like a hundred of the other types for each of those , and I do hope all our comments helps nightstalker stalk this one to his crib to lay in for a few years anyway.

Please post other photos when you finally apprehend it into your hanger .

There are a few observations I have made about this type that seems like it does have a mark, but as controversial as that is,I don't want to digress the point.

I also hope you jump on it ASAP, and do not miss getting one of them, as once you have one, they are like potato chips.....

On the issue of the sea badge , they are tough to get, I don't have one...yet, .....so I can't comment any on the subject, as you know more than I do about those. If you have one or some to show, sometime start a thread on it as I'd like to learn more on them too.

I do know they are really beautifully made when they are originals, but highly faked , and I put them in the same catagory as finding a rare type zeppelin badge .
