Crowns, for no known reason, sometimes show up on Napoleonic era PLM's and can seemingly show up at any time on lapel miniatures.

A lot of collectors are unaware that there was a market for many generations for theatrical copies of European orders, to include the PlM. While the majority of these copies were terribly executed (and terribly out of proportion, too), I've seen many - even some made uniface - that are quite believable.

Dealers, however, have always prefered to call them "jeweler's copies" since that sounds more far more respectable.

        Another copy worth mentioning...

This photo shows a copy PlM that has been circulating for the last year or so. Within the last few weeks there were two of these offered on Ebay. One of them was described as an "older" copy, and did not sell with a Buy-It-Now price of $250. An identical piece was offered as a 20's/30's copy, and sold for around $800. What was the difference? Only the description. Now that's what I call marketing! In fact, I believe these are currently being produced somewhere in Europe.

These eagles are distinctive enough to tell them from the originals, but the easiest thing to spot is there is no cut-out between the legs and the tail. It's only a matter of time before someone gets a jeweler's file and cuts that area out, however, so beware!

It's amazing what you can learn by just looking at the dealers who sell repros and are up-front about it (as well the ones who aren't up-front about it, but you know they're selling fakes anyway).

On a second perusal of Morigi's site I realized that the "Wilm" cases he's selling aren't made by Wilm at all - they're just stamped that way under the mistaken assumption that Wilm made the original PlMs. He also sells cases for WW1 zeppelin badges and submarine badges with the C.E. Juncker stamp in the lid.

Tim, and on the same note, the Condor Legion Tank Badge repro sold there comes in a box marked C.E. Juncker of which I have seen no proof they ever made the badge. It is all marketing to sell the repro in the best 'looking' light. The problem with this approach is it becomes 'fact' in collector's minds that for example Juncker made the Tank badge...

OK, Steve, are you ready? Do you have $15,000 burning a hole in your pocket? Check out Detlev Niemann's update today. As of 9:00 a.m. PST (a good 3.5 hours after he posted the update), the Pour le Merite is still unsold.
