      Ek ii 1870

      Gentlemen,
please correct me if I'm wrong....
Haven't all oak leaves been added quite some years later....
does it really down grade a cross when the oak leaves have been moved
from one ribbon to the other.....??
Yes these prongs break easily when one tries to remove them....
veterens with little money might have tried to do the add ons/alterations
themselves..as seen, not always to a collector's liking..
housed in a considerably strong and massive case even the patch up
work (painting) on the ribbon could be explained simply...
(it just shows when having a very close look)
A dealer/faker aiming at maximum profit would have surely done a different job !!
why do we always enter a "worst case scenario" discussion...
I have been confirmed the measurements:
      weight : 16.1g / dimensions : 42 mm
Nevertheless I truely apreciate and accept all comments made
      Sincerely yours
      Wolf

Thats very easy to answer. 1870 crosses are selling at high prices, starting at 350 euros up to 450. Add an oak leave , +100 euro, add box...+ 100 - 250?

That IS a lot of money so you have to be SURE what you buy ain't crap. Being sure is always difficult, especially with 1870 and older crosses. The recent blob fakes (or are they real ), ninth bead fakes and Frankenstein crosses prove that, in my opinion, fakers know a lot of money can be made in this field. So for these prices I myself have to be convinced...

A small example (and yeah call me paranoid), a nice L/52 ek1 was on auction yesterday. The seller did mention the soldering was loose. The cross looked burned/rusted and is in my opinion from the "Burned Zimmerman Horde". Nothing wrong, it sold for 91 euros. The seller also pictured a lot with other medals and things, and he didn't claim it belonged together. No problem there. However as a lot, one easily mistakes it as from one soldier, giving it provenance. There was a cased Ek2 in that lot, also sold separately (I even think the case was discussed on another forum). BUT as the ek1 is from the Zimmerman horde (OK my opinion) the lot is NOT from one man. Hence the case has no provenance... but did probably add to the value... (and note that I am NOT accusing the seller!)

My conclusion is never to be too paranoid, unless you can spend your money easily (I can't ).

        Best regards,
        Michel

              EK II 1870 cased

              Hi Michel,
my English ain't that exciting...that's why I did not understand
              your last post !
You managed to buy that EK ?
783.- € seems a lot after all these rather "down grading" comments !
I , myself liked that piece since the set semed to be period (or post period
              messed with...children??) assembled/altered.
The weight and dimensions seem to be "spot on"....no
I'm a bit curious since I've been bidding on it but bailed out due to members
              convincing comments.
              Sincerely yours
              Wolf

Yes you did misunderstood! 783 euro is way too much money for this 'ensemble' in my opinion.

                My guess of 450 (ek2)+100 (oaks)+250(max case) = 800 wasn't too bad as it sold for 783.

                Best regards,
                Michel
