    Godet made Russian Order

    Hello All,

Here is an interesting order..... A German made Imperial Russian Order of St. George...

For those of you who have followed the Ernst I von Sax-Altenburg threads.... Herr Ernst has now come to live at the Avery houshold.... and in doing so... I now havethe daunting task of replicating his medal bar (as pictured in an earlier thread)...

One of the peices that I thought would be the hardest one to find turned out to be one of the first ones... An Order of St. George...

and what's even better ... is that it is made by Godet and the first thing that stands out is the suspension... It is in the typical German style rather than the Russian style (like an IC 2nd class)...

Hey Mark, I noticed the center background color is more of a pink, wasn't that supposed to be more of a red? Of course, I know as much about Russian as I do about women. No comments required! Great looking order, I think the RAO comment looks right on!

An interesting fact from Andreas Schulze-Ising's site on the Red Eagle Order 3rd class:

In 1817, influenced by the Russian order system, the size was altered to fit the size of the Russian St. George order 4th class. This was the size the 3rd class badge would keep until 1918.

Russian made pieces do have red background in the centers, also the centers range from this same size to much smaller. But I have seen others of this "German made" type with pink background.

Early Russian made examples of the St. George had pink backgrounds, up to about the 1860's (I think). There used to be an excellent web site in French that covered a lot of Russian orders, especially the St. George. Unfortunately, it is now defunct.

Here is a photo of one of the early "long service" pieces, with a pink background.
