They are listed as being in the wholesale trade of books, magazines, newspapers, music and other printed matter.

Same name, same are of Berlin, although many decades later a different business? Anyone interested in stopping by the store to talk to the owners and see if there is any relevant family history?

        Hi!

Thanks guys for sharing those informations! This should be added to the "Imperial Reference" Thread!

Great one, hope this might be done for Wagner too!

That is very interesting, Marshall. I didn't know that. I would love to hear from anyone else who knows of any other decorations marked for J. Godet & Sohn that were most definitely made after 1932.
Fascinating thread... Bring on the J H Werner connection..
I know this is the question that is of great interest here. I will admit that I have drawn this conclusion from no specific source; it is the result of a bit of detective work from various sources. Because of this, it will take me some time to assemble all the evidence, narrate my process, and make the case. I also need to do some scans, etc. So I will ask your patience.

In the meantime please continue to post any period Godet documents and awards. For fun I will show an EK1 made by Godet-Werner (unfortunately not mine). You will notice a familiar 800 mark from other Godets (remember this one?), but a frame and core not usually associated with Godets at all.

Yes well done Trevor - that EK1 pretty much clinches it for me..

For those of you that can log in to GMIC, I asked a question some years ago here http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopi...****entry72363 about the Werner/Godet connection, based on the jointly named medal bar tags and eventually got a response from someone who had a 1930 copy of "Militar-Wochenblatt". Apparently, on page 1034, there is an advertisement that reads...

              J. Godet & Sohn / J.H. Werner
              seit 1761 Juweliere
              Berlin W. Friedrichstra?e 173
              zwischen Franz?schische und J?ger Stra?e
              Juwelen * Goldschmuck * SIlberwaren
              Bestecke * Uhren * Ehrenpreise
Werkstatt im Hause - Vorschriftm??. Orden Zusammen-
stellungen - In- und Ausland - Original / Minatur
              "Wie trage ich meine Orden?
              Brosch?re 1,25 M porotfrei. Postscheck: Berlin 227 69

If we could get our hands on a copy of that advert, I think any doubt could well be dispelled, but certainly it would appear that by 1930, J Godet & Sohn were in bed with J H Werner to some extent. Trevor may indeed have a copy, so I will wait for his presentation before going any further.

Trevor - Here are a couple of photos of SK's posted here before with the Godet markings. Quite honestly, although there are a few who can tell a real one, I am not one of them, and there are quite a few nice copies.

Of course, the Oakleaves and Oakleaves & Swords were made by Gebruder Godet.

                  Marshall,

I had heard and read of the sale of J. Godet & Sohn "to someone" for a while when I started investigating. The more I looked into it, the more I discovered. Then I got a hold of the Orders and Decorations listing from the Berlin phonebook from 1875 to 1943. It both validated the theory of a sale, corroborated various bits of evidence I had accumulated on awards, marks, Ordensspange labels, even packets, as well as allowed me to map Godet's addresses precisely and accurately over the entire span. I got this material from a friend on the SDA forum, and I will post a lot of the relevant information here.

For now I will post just three partial pages.

In 1930, J. Godet & Sohn was surprisingly and suddenly relocated to the long-time headquarters of J.H. Werner, and was called Godet-Werner on the side.

The next year, 1931, Gebrüder Godet opens at Charlottenstraße 55. Their ad loudly proclaims that Jean and Eugene Godet are the proprietors (Inhaber), and Gebrüder lays claim to the Godet legacy, at least spiritually, by claiming to be the the "oldest Orders jewelers." This must have taken Werner a bit by surprise, because their ad was unchanged that year.

....but all that changes over the next few years. J. Godet & Sohn start running increasingly large ads saying, "now at 173 Friedrichstraße," then "Since 1761," then, by 1940, "only at Unter den Linden 53"*:

                  * by the way, J. Godet & Sohn moved from Unter den Linden 12 to 53 in 1937, a fact I've not mentioned previously.

I have more to say and post, and I will, in the next few days, as I find the time.

Great, thanks Gentry. I would love to collect a lot of visual information in this thread as well. Marshall, any interest in re-posting your J. Godet & Sohn (1913-1929) catalogue in here too?

Thanks for posting your Gebrüder catalogue Greg.

There is evidence to be found even on the cover, in my opinion.

Notice how they studiously avoid saying "Since 1761," but manage to imply it in two different areas? The image at the top of Jean Godet has the date 1761 next to it, and then, just below the word ORDEN, they write, "5th generation since 1761." I don't think they were legally permitted to write simply "Since 1761," but they wanted to lay claim to the famous company's lineage nonetheless.

                      Best regards,
