      Hi Dollyferret,

You never know until everyone gets a look at a mark, I think that is one lesson from the Godet history, as they used quite a number of them over the years. There are of course all manner of fake versions, too. Anyway, all you need to do is sign up for a free Photobucket account, they upload the image from your documents using the browse option you are used to, and then you can reference the hyperlink from them. There will be a button that reads "get links" and it is the bottom-most one. If you just select that link, it will usually automatically offer to copy it to your clipboard, so if you select "copy", you can just paste it right into a reply on the forum. Really pretty slick!

Welcome! I'm interested (as I'd guess is everybody in this thread) to see what you've got!

                    Welcome to the forum.

This thread is not the best place to post your item. I'd post it in the SS forum (here) and see what those guys say.

But in my opinion the inkwell is a postwar piece having nothing to do with the SS which was dolled up with fake engravings to increase its value. However, this opinion is based on my knowledge of Godet, and also of German military iconography (which never embraced roses to my knowledge) -- not any knowledge of the SS.

So I hope I'm wring for your sake.
                    Best regards,

                      Hi

                      Agreed

The engraving seems very fresh / modern, and the old inkwell
have nothing to do with Godet or SS... Sorry

                      BR

You should follow Trevor's suggestion to post to the SS forum, Pete--you can link this thread to a posting there (hey, wouldn't hurt to cross-pollinate those guys!), but I do think this is the right place to be looking at the Godet mark. It bears the "K.G.", correctly for the 1942 date, right? The "J" looks like a "T" in the picture, but while that may be a sign of concern, it may also be something to ponder, since this thread is about the full history of the Godet firm/s, with TR era implications on the table already. Where is the mark on the inkwell? Is the surface curved, in a way that would interfere with the loop of the "J"?

We might want to consider that Godet was long a firm of silversmiths, doing all manner of tea services, spoon, gravy tureens and heaven-only-knows what kind of decorative metalwork. Why not an engraved gift from Berlin's premier Metalsmith (that is, buy an already fashioned object, in this case a decorated inkwell, and have it engraved, a common enough practice even today) for acknowledgment of some significant event for the SS officer in question? I wouldn't go for the Webley just yet, Pete! (no point in shooting a perfectly good inkwell smile wink )

thanks for your replies guys, its a good job I also invested my pension into a mint fibre glass twin diesel engine Viking long boat complete with gps and a waffle maker comes with genuine provenance found in the next lock up garage.ha ha glad the snooker room was closed and the memshabs webley was a Chinese copy that didn't work.
now If I can just get some Kevlar covered oars for my genuine longboat off ebay(where else) I will be able to afford to buy the genuine arc of the covenant as signed by indy jones and elvis.
                          thanks guys
