A Little Help With a Great War EKII Please

    .

    Greetings All,

(I erroneously posted this in the Wehrmacht awards forum earlier this AM and am reposting it here...apologies for the error.)

I acquired the following supposed WWI vintage EKII quite a long time ago for the outrageous sum of $12 and was wondering if one of you experts here could give me a bit of info on it.

This is a three-piece item with a magnetic core, and silver surronds and loop, (which have all tarnished), and there appears to be the remnants of a maker's mark as indicated by the red arrow. However, it is so faint and shallow that I cannot sort out what it might be: could be an 'F'; could be a narrow 'W'; could just be an odd series of nicks that only look like a maker's mark; can't tell at all unfortunately. Any help in ID'ing this item will be much appreciated.

    Cheers!

    Lou

If I see it correct from the pics, it has a blackened iron core rather than a painted one.

In this case its a very early EK2 from WW1, it shows great quality.

Congrats, a very nice example that would fit very well in my collection as well!

    Greetings
    Andy

Many thanks for the input Andy. If I had to guess I'd say the core is "blackened" rather than painted, at least the patina would seem to indicate that, as well as the one or two very small scratches on the core's surface. I've had this cross sitting on the shelf in my WWI flying room and it looks very nice in amongst my other "treasures". EK-collector had asked that I try and get a close-up of what may be the maker's mark, and this is the best I can do:

Perhaps someone here will recognize this, or as I said earlier, perhaps it is just an odd assortment of nicks.

BTW, what would be the proper width ribbon to include with this cross and how would it have likely been displayed for a WWI aviator? I have seen the triangular fold of the ribbon, as well as the straight hanging style. If I recall it has something to do with the region the recipient is from, (i.e. Prussia, Austria, Württemberg, etc), or am I off base with that?

      Cheers!

      Lou

Hard to tell from the pictures but I believe the makers mark
on your cross is a "K". This is still a unknown maker but some have
suggested it might be for Klein and Quenzer but that is just a guess.

To see others to compare against, got to our database and scroll down
        to "K"

Many thanks gregM, it does look quite a bit like a 'K' at that. And now that I study the enlarged digital image more closely myself it almost looks as if there is a six-pointed star above the 'K' as well. I will go through the other maker's marks in the link you provided. Much appreciated Sir.

          Cheers!
