IR 40 question

Is there anyone who can advise me where the above mentioned regiment was put into action during WW I ?

To start you off with a negative, Die Schlachten und Gefechte ----- does not have any entries for IR 40, although it has about three for the Ersatz Regiment Nr 40, a Saxon unit, all on the Eastern Front.

However, traditionally, IR 40 was part of 29th Brigade of Infantry, 15th Infantry Division, Cologne. The 15th ID has 31 entries in Schlachten ---, all but two on the Western Front. Of course after the divisional reorganization in mid-war the IR 40 could have gone elsewhere. Also, possibly, sometimes betwwen 1900 and 1914 the regiment may have been put in another division, but I think not.

The first engagement listed for ID 15. was with the 4th Army, VIII Army Corps, the Battle by Neufchateau. Specific engagement was at Maissin, August 22-23, 1914.

First engagement in Russia was at Kowel, 7/28/16 thru 11/4/16, in Army Group Linsingen.

Well, IR 40- Fusiler Regt von Hollenzollern mustv'e been in the drive west in France because they lost a LOT of officers in August 1914 in places like hochwalsch, Senones, Banteur, Regnieville.

By the extensive list of casualties, I'd say they were in France in 1914-15, being rebuilt Summer/Fall 1915, then back to France where they stayed through 1918.
My Ehrenzeichen Officers book lists IR40 as being part of the 28th ID. This is confirmed by the US Intelligence book of 1918 and says it was part of the 14th Army Corps in Alsace and the Champange and in 1918-the Marne. The regiment was recruited heavily in Baden.

Hi,

There was no Infanterie-Regiment 40. However, Füsilier-Regiment Fürst Karl Anton von Hohenzollern (Hohenzollernsches) Nr. 40 was part of 28. Infanterie-Division, which spent the entire war on the Western Front.

I had once to take several aspirins trying to solve the following enigma:


Only after I had checked that there was only a Füsilier-Regiment 34 in the German army, it became clear that I had to do with an Austrian-Hungarian Kappenabzeichen.
