Mine appears to have more defined detail ? But if mine is post war surely the same die would be used and just a different pin, hinge and catch ? They are the same maker afterall.

Maybe mines fake ?

Michel-- your recipient was only an "Obermatrose," or Gefreiter, so no personnel records on him.

Marcus-- I don't know. But Meybauer pieces ALWAYS seem to have their characteristic "fish tail" pin up at the hinge end, and yours doesn't.

The hinge and pin on Michel's U-boat badge is almost identical to WW2 Paul Meybauer EK1’s. Based on this I would date this piece late 30’s, early 40’s. <O</O

I was looking at the EK's too, to see if mine was okay in any way shape or form ? I think mine could be a 1960's copy ???? I don't know, maybe Gordon Williamson could tell.

I think the 20's and 30's badges were better detailed than Michels, and the earlier they are the more 'sloppy' for want of a better word, the detail is.

Can anyone else post pictures of their Imperial U boot badges......any examples of WW1 and post war Maybauers out there ?

I disagree with Dez´s late dating of Michel´s badge. Here is a steel WWI Oldenburg FA cross by Meybauer (which is period WWI) with that same pin.

I am curious as to how you were able to positively date it to period WW1. Couldn't it just as easily be a strike from the 20's or 30's?
These crosses were made in brass and steel/iron during the those years as well, no?

Dear Eric,

That is theoretically right, but the context of this badge when I acquired it, was period WWI. Don´t know if this is 100% reliable, but a knowledgeable German Imperial collector I know well also confirmed to me that this is typical WWI manufacture.

So that type pin is certainly not a sure sign for a late thirties or even forties manufacture as Dez suggested.
