      Nice, Carl.

      I feel like the evidence is pointing to this mark being from the post WWI period. 1919 of course would fit with that. But it would not fit with Gebrüder Godet, so perhaps that is mistaken, or perhaps this shield is made later than the award document. A lot of variables to consider with this mark.

      Let's hope something else appears to clarify some of this.

        I tend to agree, always considered most Prinzen as "in between the wars" for various reasons and the Godet ones are probably of Gebr manufacture. Problem is the multitude of marks and the lack of binding proof to when they were used. What about the 'square incuse 800 mark' for example since it keeps popping up on all kinds of Godet, even textbook ones.

        Who knows, maybe the brothers took their usable stamps with them when they sold the business?

          I just wondered if there was yet a new generation of fakes I had not seen?

          I think this fake is only decent -- to a trained eye it jumps out as a fake in 2 seconds, compared to an original.
          Trevor,

          What is the story on this type of 1813 and why is it considered a repro?

          Thanks,

          Tony

            Hi Tony,

            I think it is considered a repro for the following reasons:
            1. it appeared in great numbers on the market recently (within the past 15 years);
            2. its core matches no known originals;
            3. details of construction are modern;
            4. its core design matches known-fake Prinzens and half-sizes of 1813, 1870, and 1914 EK2s.

            Here are some decent threads on the type. Although some of these discuss the Prinzen variety, they're all from the same bad chicken:

            Good-bye, 1813 EK 2 Club
            1813 EK 2 on e-Stand
            Prinzen Iron Crosses (gmic)

            Hope this helps
            Best regards,

                Here is another one just coming up for auction with the same frame, core, and marks.

                  Here is a honor saber with shield belonging to Tony (Tiger1)

                  I'll let Tony provide any details.-----

                    Thanks Greg.

                    This sword/saber was bought at the SOS in Louisville a few years ago.

                    What I knew or deduced at that time was that this sword was of very high quality construction and finish. The hilt is a grosser size, heavy weight lionhead with extra quality hand chiseling. That the shield had the distinctive Hindenburg 'H' only added to it's mystery for being. It was easy to see that this was a special sword

                    I would like to know the significance of the date.

                    Seeing the back of the shield and an original award document has been a real treat.

                      That is one impressive Sabre! It should really have a thread of it's own, with pics of shield and doc.

                      Greg, can you save the pics and open a new thread?

                        Thanks Carl,

                        Swords, sabers and degens as well as other edged weapons are another collecting passion of mine.
