I wouldn't mind having this set hanging on the wall. Another one from Steven, of a Commander with Star:

Yup,I do love those hand painted centres. The first one is a Grand Cross set with a strange story to it. It is a family set and was separated at an unknown time. My uncle had the sash badge and gave it to me and said ,"the broach thing that goes with it has vanished, but I'll keep looking."
It became one of those "I'll never see it" or "if I could only find it" things in life. About 10 years after getting the badge and never expecting to ever see the star,a miracle occurred. My wife and I were making the rounds of the antique stores and pawn shops when she grabbed me and pulled me over to the window of a pawn shop.Guess what was hanging there? My wife had recognized from a photo and we went in.I was thinking that I'd not be able to afford it;boy was I in for a surprise,The woman behind the counter said it had been in the back for years and she felt it was time to get some money for it.Her husband was away so she could get rid of it and free up some space in the vault.I asked her where it came from and she said it was there when she got married and her husband just kept hanging on to it.
She felt so bad about the price that she threw in a chain so it could be worn as a pendant. We paid and rushed to my parents to show my father who laughed and laughed because he now knew it was the star from the set and that we had gotten one over on the thief. He now knew exactly when and by whom it was stolen and that the thief couldn't do a thing about 'cept yell at his wife.
My father's cousin owned the pawn shop and had taken the star from my grandparents at a family function during the 40's.He had been seen in the cabinet where the order was kept and had acted guilty when caught. They knew he had something, but couldn't find what was missing or where he had hidden it.He was never invited back to the house and it was thought that my grandfather knew what was missing, but thought it best to just keep the peace. The evil cousin was banished and I had the set.All was well in Imperial Land.Last edited by stevenn; 01-27-2004, 09:01 PM.

My modest contribution...
Hi Everybody,
I was following with interest this great thread. I cannot contribute too much, but lately my brother was lucky enough to find a nice single court mounted "Ehrenkreuz 2. Klasse" of the above mentioned "Haus- und Verdienstorden von Herzog Peter Friedrich Ludwig"... this cross comes quite at the end of the list of this beautiful order...
Ricky (Lundström)! My brother and I (in seinem Auftrag) always look for "Einzelbandspange"... it has become our "secret" objective and daily mission... to reunite all Einzelnbandspange-types of Germany in our collection... of course!!! Eheheh... I think we are going both crazy... But attention: it's quite contagious...
Ciao,

oldenburg
It may have one of the most frustrating ribbons, other than Austria's "red ladder" ,but the workmanship on even the iron merit crosses is supurb.Thank you for the kind comments re my collection. We don't have too many collectors up here that appreciate Orders. It's mainly British and Canadian "coins" that are collected in thi neck of the woods. The Can.-Brit. medals are wonderful because so many of them are named and the history they have is fantastic, but they all look the same to me.

Originally posted by Rick ResearchThe Oldenburg House Order was, I think, probably the most THOROUGH decoration in Germany, with grades foor everybody, and no awkward "in betweens" like most of the other states.
Here's a Merit Cross, not sure if the black iron class or the silver (there was also a gold) with swords-- still from Steven's hoard:

Would say as Lt/1st Lt a knight 2nd class (silver enameled cross)
as Captain a knight 2nd class with crown and as MAjor a knight 1st class.
Best regards
Daniel
Thanks,
Chris
