    Ek2 to Ek1 field conversion

Up for discussion is a Ek2 converted into a Ek1.
This was sometimes done so the cross could be worn untill the
    "offical " cross was awarded.

The backside shows a crudely soldered period style pin. The small ring
was removed and the frame was nicely repaired. (barely visible under
the build up of dirt and tarnish)

I'm not sure that any real criteria exist by which to judge the authenticity of these, but I like the way this one looks, Greg. I think I've seen that type of closure on period safety pins before, and the sloppiness of the conversion sure speaks well for it being "field converted," as you wrote.

I will agree, these are kind of a gray area but everything looks right
on this one. Period style pin, dirt, gunk, patina. It just feels right.

                I can't believe I actually said that.
I have seen this line used by so many rookies trying to convince someone that a piece is good.

                  Is that soldered or glued??
Do I see the remains of a previous pin attachment on the upper 3 o'clock arm on the reverse?
The pin itself reminds me of 40s/50s Soviet pins.
                  Thanks,

That certainly looks period. My example has a more elaborate pin and retainer system, and is very nicely finished.

It is soldered and the pin is a common German style of the day.
I have a ek2 single medal bar with the same pin and I also have
a period catalog showing this pin being offered on their ribbon bars.
As for whats in the solder ? No clue. If this is a pin added over an
eariler conversion attempt, That might explain some of the crudeness
                      of the soldering.

                      Here is a scan.

Neat scan, Greg. A period catalogue offering ribbon bars?

It's really no different than a 1939 EKII converted with a twist of the ring and a loop and you have an RK. You know it happened but you can't be sure it happened to the one in hand. It would be nice to be true so it is what it is. It is an example of one that may or not be period converted or one that looks exactly like one that was converted. No problems with it.

I've got some old catalogs from Godet,S-L, Deumer, Kust. They
come in handy ever now and again.

However, many of the EK to RK conversions try and bring a big dollar with no proof. This one Greg shows is more believable. Even if it is a Russian pin, 40s era puts it in the WW2 period, and the German army was in Russia, so....
