          Thank you. Those are very nice examples. The early 1870 piece is very interesting. I saw a photo in Gordon Williamson's book of an officer wearing an Iron Cross below his 1914 EKI, must have been a German State's cross, page 184. I can see why the Imperial collecting can be very extensive, and very interesting.

                          Don,

                          Now I see where the majority of your time is spent. You must have a broad knowledge of the Imperial era, and the awards. Your medal bars and individual medals are historical treasures, to say the least.
                          Excuse my ignorance, but were these German State EK equivilents on the same level as our WWI US State's medals that were given to vets, or were they of much higher recognition and merit?

                            Robert, I'm not too familar with our State's medals. The German States all had thier own bravery awards that they issued thier troops and others assigned to thier units. You have to think of Germany as a confederation of states that had only been together as a nation since 1870. The Prussian Iron Cross was issued as a national award during the war.

                                Sorry Don,

                                Stupid questions don't merit answers. I went back into the Imperial section and read the history of the Prussian overthrow/uniting of the various German States up to the French declaration of war against Prussia in 1870 for Prussia's 'expansionists policies.' From what you were previously saying the German States united in 1870 to form a 'confederation of States', yet all having their own awards for their own State's troops. And as a whole the EKII was once again reinstituted as a Prussian award in 1870. And the same again in 1914. I have a lot to learn of their history. I'm sure in collecting the awards I will continue to learn the history as well.
