    Godet 1870 EK1

George, I wish my 1870 Godet was in as nice a shape as your 1914. Anyway, here it is.

Nice cross, Doug. My 1870 example is by Wagner & Sohn.

Here's a variation on the Wagner 1870 theme:
      I. Wagner & S 14 LOTH (vaulted)

Once again you guys kill me. Beautiful pieces, all. Doug, your 1870 is nothing to be ashamed about. I'm a sucker for fastening hooks, and the Godet mark is superlative.

Hey guys, Happy New Year! Here is my latest find, an 1870 EK2, jeweler converted to an EK1! Came as a cased pair with an 1895 commemorative medal for the 1870/71 war!

            Rick,
That's a nice one! The conversion looks really well done. Have you seen the cased 1870 EK2 on eBay? Look at the case itself--it's a super piece.

                Rick,
Once again you have all the luck. Nice piece indeed and great conversion.

I just took a look at the cased 1870 EK2 that was on ebay. It did not sell. The case to me looks like a 1914 EK2 case. I have a very similiar 1914 one in my collection. I would be very carefull purchasing a cased 1870 EK2. It is so very easy for someone to slip a 1870 EK2 in a plain 1914 EK2 case! I only buy a 1870 EK2 case when it has a 1870 decal or emblem on the lid. I have 4 of these in my collection.

I agree with Paul, while a beautiful case (eBay 1870 EK2) it is a deluxe case for the 1914 EK2. I confirmed this with Detlev Niemann, who states the same. Too bad, I'd like to have that case with the proper cross for 1914 in it!

                      Paul,
Very good point and probably a wise position to take for that amount of asking price. The cross was offerred to me before it went on eBay through a German dealer I trust. But, since it belonged to his friend and he was not going to back it, I passed. I still like the case, but you are correct in that it may be a put-together set, or a post 1895 jeweler set.

I once got an 1870 EK 2 with 25-year Oakleaf cluster in a case which I later determined was for a 1914 (similar to the one on the right of page 173 of "The Iron Time"). Still, the price was fair enough for what I got: a nice 1870 cross and a nice 1914 case that now holds the correct cross.

You guys are right, a tough call all the way around. Seller was firm on the price too. I asked as I liked the case, but not for the amount. Indeed a shame.

                            Paul,
Any chance you could post photos of your 1870 cases, and any other unusual cases in your collection? I think cases are a much under-appreciated part of award collecting.

HaHa! FINALLY someone sees the stogieman point of view! Cases, packets of issue, cardboard outer boxes....rare, rare, rare!
Sorry, lost it there for a second!
(my pride & joy are a pair of cased St. Henri Knight's Crosses)
