George, I wish my 1870 Godet was in as nice a shape as your 1914. Anyway, here it is.

Hey guys, Happy New Year! Here is my latest find, an 1870 EK2, jeweler converted to an EK1! Came as a cased pair with an 1895 commemorative medal for the 1870/71 war!

I just took a look at the cased 1870 EK2 that was on ebay. It did not sell. The case to me looks like a 1914 EK2 case. I have a very similiar 1914 one in my collection. I would be very carefull purchasing a cased 1870 EK2. It is so very easy for someone to slip a 1870 EK2 in a plain 1914 EK2 case! I only buy a 1870 EK2 case when it has a 1870 decal or emblem on the lid. I have 4 of these in my collection.Imperial German Medalbars and Ribbonbars

Paul,
Very good point and probably a wise position to take for that amount of asking price. The cross was offerred to me before it went on eBay through a German dealer I trust. But, since it belonged to his friend and he was not going to back it, I passed. I still like the case, but you are correct in that it may be a put-together set, or a post 1895 jeweler set.

I once got an 1870 EK 2 with 25-year Oakleaf cluster in a case which I later determined was for a 1914 (similar to the one on the right of page 173 of "The Iron Time"). Still, the price was fair enough for what I got: a nice 1870 cross and a nice 1914 case that now holds the correct cross.
