    Well, the deed is done and I'm happy with the result. The paint was probably modelling paint - a thick gloss black coating over a thin metallic silver coat.

    Here are some pics;

    First up, after less than 30 seconds in an acetone bath with no agitation...

      next, still in the bath after some ligth toothbrushing....

        ....and after about 15 minutes of light toothbrushing to get into all the crevices, then a soap water brush and finally a blow dry, some scans of the final (original) product. The acetone did not effect the original dark patina of the worn tombak either whereas a brass/silver polish would have removed the patina.
