    Is it possible to narrow down vet by medal bar?

    Hi Guys

    I suppose this question has been asked many times before, however I am just curious to know if anyone has the ability to possibly identify a medal ribbon bar to an individual or unit. Obviously I know it would have to be somewhat unique. I do have a very unique one of German awards to a man that served in the Boxer Rebellion and in Finland during 1918.

    Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

      Here is a photo of the lot. I just purchased this at an auction as I was always looking for such a group regarding German/Finnish operations in 1918.

        Interesting NCO's medal bar, with what appears to be a Turkish War Medal on the end. I don't think it's ID'able due to the lack of orders and the fact that the numbers of awards for these medals is high, such as the AEZ and the Finnish medals.

            Turkish Medal vs. Long Service?

            HI Guys

            Thanks for the opinions, much appreciated. So I suppose that a man that was part of a German unit in 1899-1901 would not have remained in the same unit through WWI and in Finland in 1918. I can see that possibly being difficult but if it is possible how many German units that served in China also served in Finland? I guess I will have to research that.

            As for the medal on the end being Turkish service, is this possible in that order or is it possibly a long service ribbon? It looks to be more yellow stripes than white but that could be aging?

              There are many possibilities. The guy could have been in China and then left the service at the end of his time, gotten called back for WW1 and served in a different unit. With the Turkish award I would lean towards a navy guy. What color is the backing cloth?

                Backing cloth is black with a Kiel maker tag sewn in.

                      Wow, I was not told that originally and now that I was able to go back to the actual catalog you are right. The site I was working from did not translate the German properly. Still that is both interesting and embarrassing. Sorry guys. I still appreciate the help.

                          That's great news, as ID'd bars from the ranks are not common. I have a similar Navy bar with a Turkish medal, but no ID.

                            That's a great bar! Finland 1918 is a really soft spot that I have.
