Does anyone have any side-by-side surveys of STrichtan's affectiveness in the field next to other patterns of camo at the time? I can't find anything of that nature on the forum...Im interested in seeing its effectiveness, as from a distance, all I can ever see is a straight brown/tan uniform.

Also, do any hunters have an oppinion on the forum as to its efeectiveness in said sport?

I am no expert and can only repeat what I have heard or read elsewhere which I cannot trace any more. Camouflage can be conceived as static and dynamic. In the static version, it is supposed to conceal the outline of the object/person when standing to make identification/location by the enemy more difficult. Large splotches in an irregular pattern are supposed to do the trick. In that respect the Strichtarn must have been VERY bad because at a distance any higher than a couple of metres, the rain pattern disappears into a uniform colour that does not conceal the shape of the wearer at all. The dynamic version of camouflage is the one allegedly behind the introduction of the current digital patterns. It is meant to make target acquisition more difficult as the minute patterns blur confusingly as the wearer moves. The Strichtarn has been suggested as an early example of that, although I am not really clear whether a precondition for this story to work is the usage of modern optics etc.

I personally think that the Strichtarn was not very good at all as a camo pattern and that it just substituted the Blumentarn because it was cheaper to produce.

Genosse iannima, Before we all get bogged down in the whole Camouflage pattern auguments and your unsoviet unpleasantness is dealt with in a real sense.... ....

The science of Camouflage with its Micro and Macro patterns is very interesting, rods and cones of the eyes and all that....

Green is still the best all train Camouflage if you are moving.... All Arms Battle Doctrine is the Doctrine of Movement.

Any particular reason why the DDR abandoned the blumentarn outside of its expense? Im curious, because as you say, strichtarn is quite a unique, and lets just face it, much less affective camo...sorry Genosse ViktorI'm sure the staff car wil be deployed shortly

            The investigation continues

Well seeing as I had a long hiatus as well I am only getting to this very interesting development now.. Oh well anyway here is what I found.

However, it still has those rhomboid foliage loops on the upper sleeves (circled), which were done away with after '68. Also, I do not see the characteristic vertical stitching in the middle of the breast pocket flap that serves to divide the hidden button fly underneath (circled), which may suggest that the '67 jacket retained the single button closure of the earlier jackets (Kevin H can easily verify this for us). Post '68 jackets have a twin button closure.

Actually this is sort of an interesting detail here. There are 2 buttons on the pocket flaps on this jacket and there is vertical stitching to divide the fly, however the stitching does not go all the way through the pocket flap. It is concealed behind the top most layer of fabric.

Here are some more detailed photos of the pocket:

This compared to another undated jacket I have which must be a similar date of manufacture as the 67 (has the same elastic hem band and double foliage loops on the sleeves) , This one has the exposed stitch and strichtarn fabric instead of the thinner lining fabric of the 67:

The elastic hem on my 67 is sewn in, not button in like the 66 which I sold to RedBaron. My mystery undated jacket also has the sewn in elastic hem.

            Picture of this:

In this photo you can also see another feature of the early jackets. Two vertical stitches to take up some of the fabric around the lower back to make the garment fit better. I wonder if the 68 or 69 jackets have this feature?

I think Gene is correct in his estimate that the sewn in pistol pocket disappeared in 1969 as a 1970 jacket I have has the hidden one, however this same jacket still retains the four eyelets in the cuff adjustment band. The next example I have is a 72 with only 3, so somewhere between 1970 and 1972 the fourth one disappeared. I think it is also interesting to note that between these two years the size tag was increased in size as well.

The 67 does not have the hood attachment buttons like that of the 66.

The last detail I would like to bring up on the 67 is the cuff adjustment tabs, they are not sewn in a symmetrical point like all the other's I've seen, rather they look like this:

I know that deviates somewhat from the original topic of strichtarn pattern, but you got me on a roll Gene.

Here is a pic of a 1969 dated jacket... hope this will be of help...
I have a 1968 dated one somewhere... when I find it, I shall post pics of it too !

Thanks olivyaya. It appears that by 1969 the lower back fabric take-up stitching was gone. It would be interesting to see your 1968 if you can find it, then we will have every raindrop jacket of the 60's represented. Also, if the 1968 doesn't have the stitching, I might be able to place a year on my undated jacket as well!

Ah ha, so they didn't have then in 1968 either. Looks fairly likely that I have 2 1967 jackets. Thanks again Olivyaya for sheding light on this.

Since this thread has been referenced in a new thread, maybe this is as good a time as any to summarize what I had learned through all these (ancient) discussions.

The table below contains everything that was covered in this and other threads related to this topic, plus what I have been able to observe in person. There are many "missing" years here (represented by '?') because my data collection has been sporadic, constrained in large measure by whatever my local surplus stores had seen fit to put on their racks; that, plus the fact that a significant percentage of the jackets I had come across had no legible year codes. Nevertheless, I believe most (if not all) of the jacket variations, major and minor, are covered in the eight and a half types identified below.

As for the trousers, one would assume that they underwent a parallel evolution along the same time line, but I have not paid attention to it beyond the obvious major redesign in 1967.

Those who already have a substantial Strichtarn collection can probably fill in the missing years with relative ease. I've been trying to build one myself, at a VERY leisurely pace, through multiple five-year plans...

Thanks, Ralph and Michael! With so much great input from the forum members over the years, I thought that this thread was in need of a summary, so that new members (e.g., Sebastian) wouldn't have to dig too hard to find what they are looking for. My original plan was to post the table as an update once I have filled in all those "?" marks. However, given the glacial pace at which I have been going about collecting the data, this day may never arrive. So I figured I might as well toss it out there now, with the hopes that those who have access to large piles of these uniforms (Nico? Steve?) will see fit to help fill in the gaps in due course.

                                My jacket

I'm very happy to have found this Thread thanks to Iannima and Michael D. Gallagher. Because of the information I gathered on this thread, I think I have found out what model my oldest jacket is.
I believe it's a model A, but the date of production in unreadable, so please help me, if I'm wrong.

First i turned the first pattern picture in Gene T's post (Post 12) upside down, and it matched.

The jacket has the waist cinch (If it means that the jacket has two lines of stitches at the back which makes it more shapesewn??) I can post a picture if needed.

The jacket also has a more square shaped inside pocket and visible stitches between the two breastpocket buttons

As you can see, it also has two loops on both the right and left upper arm and one above each breast

If it helps, everywhere on my jacket when two lines of stitches follow each other, the one is always khaki and the other olive green. A funny and strange detail.

when following Gene T's info at post 40: If chest foliage loops was first introduced in 1967 but the waist cinch from 1965 was removed the same year, and if only one single breast pocket button was used in 1965 but two was used in 1967, my jacket must be the 1966 model?? i believe i have found the missing spot for that year!!
