    Wax Seal stamps

Hello all…I thought it would be of interest to start a thread and hope to spur some discussion on wax seal stamps that were used during the Cold War. So to get the thread going I thought I would provide what I know and post pictures of wax seals stamps from my collection. I by far do not have all the answers regarding wax seals and stamps, but hope fellow forum members will post what they know and have in their collections to improve our understanding of these types of stamps.

Wax seals and stamps have been used for centuries to seal important documents or used when documents were to be delivered to other people when a person needed to keep written communication a secret from others. During the Cold War, wax seals and stamps were primarily used to seal documents, envelopes and containers. From my understanding, the DDR used wax sticks that were heated up of which the wax would drip on to the paper and then the stamp was pressed over it. Over the years I have seen two different colors used; red and tan. I have also seen dark color ink used on some wax seal stamps. I also believe that a wax stick gun was used, but to date I have not seen any on the market and I hope others can provide any information if they were even used.

I hope fellow forum members will add additional information to this thread…thanks

                      Hi Ralph,

Very interesting thread. Nice collection of different type stamps and "Stamped" examples. Sorry that I cannot contribute, as I don't have any stamps of this kind. No wax either for that matter. And my knowledge about this type of activity as it pertains to the DDR is very limited.

This is very educational, in that I had not really given any thought until now, about the wax that was used. Interesting that it appears the DDR used only two colors - red and tan.

I'll bet the wax itself was unique as well. Any information on its composition?
Anything unique about it, whether it be of the red or tan type?

Nice thread. Hope it develops further.

Hey Mike...thanks for the comments and I hope to see others post their wax seal stamps from their collections. The only other stamps from the DDR that I know of that were used within the DDR were from the MdI of which I do not have in my collection to show.

Forum question: Does anyone know if the NVA or restricted sites use wax seal stamps?

And did any other communist countries use wax seal stamps during the Cold War?

Here is one from North Korea I recently acquired for my state security collection.
Translation: "Pyongyang" - "Security Dept." It is made of heavy brass, and close to 1.5" in diameter.

Hey Chuck...thanks for posting your wax seal stamp...I did not realize that the North Koreans used wax seal stamps...

I find the handle very interesting. Does the wax seal stamp feel heavy?

                              Thanks for sharing...
