    FDJ News

I'm sitting here on the Kassel Show and had a visit from the Criminal Police, complaining that my FDJ Flag on Display wasn't covered as it is a restricted Organisation in Western Germany since 195 and something and now for whole Germany like all the Nazi Organisations. OK I understand that you have to cover Swastikas but FDJ? I don't know. So better to do this before I have to pay a Penalty for not to do it.

There are some crazy laws here. I will keep my flag in the house then.

If you did not suspect that the West was evil and fascist before...

Now there is proof. There is no good reason for FDJ to be banned, in fact it runs counter to the spirit of the occupation, I am sorry "unification" of the DDR and BRD.

        Banned since 1951 as a counter-constiutional Organisation.

Just because something was done under the guise of being LEGAL, does not make it RIGHT, only legal.

The fact that this was done in 1951 in the BRD makes me even more suspicious that it would not withstand a coherent legal challenge in a unified Germany where even the highest levels of state are occupied by people who grew up in FDJ.

FDJ was, and is, a legitimate anti-fascist organisation, and has been for a very long time.

Well, the situation with the FDJ in Germany is rather strange if you ask me. Officially they are illegal, but the FDJ argues it is legal and uses an agreement from 1990 as it's basis, as seen in the wikipedia article. So it operates openly yet it's technically illegal.

I don't see why the flag should be covered up either. I remember watching a video of FDJ members in modern Germany 'parading' (there were less than 15 of them) through Berlin along the old route of the Berlin Wall with FDJ flags and banners (even one in a helmet). And this was a news report video.
Yet these police are telling you to cover up your example. Don't know what to make of it.

Just did a bit of extra research. Apparently the FDJ are having the same problem as you had. On their website's front page currently there is a short post of the police confiscating a FDJ flag. Might be interesting to check out, though their one sided viewpoints get rather strong as you go through their site.

From their website I can also see why the German government might be doing this, judging from some of the instances in the past where the FDJ demonstrated.

                Hi,

it was banned the "FDJ in Westdeutschland", in West Germany.

The problem is, to distinguish the sign or flags, West or East Germany, because they are the same!

have they got nothing better to do? OMG, these guys really have some problems to resolve ... but I guess, illegal is illegal and if they insist then the best thing is to take the flag down of course. I know that the FDJ got outlawed in the BRD in the early 50's, but I would not have thought that this should apply to anything relating to the East German FDJ, providing that it can be shown that the flag is East German and not West German of course. I do not know the details of the law from 1951, but I would suspect that the FDJ West was outlawed in the BRD only and that this law could not be applied to the FDJ East ... would actually be quite interesting to have a closer look at this and I am really surprised that the current FDJ has not challenged this law as yet .... or have they already challenged it and lost and are just keeping quiet about that now?? Cheers, Torsten.

More and more I am coming to believe that the current government is in some ways terrified of the DDR

It as if they quake at the possibility that many citizens will come to the consider the possibility that a "Democratic Republic", without the influence of the Russians, may be a better quality of life.

Perhaps substantial and true democratic reform, would have been the better solution than unification.

yes, it would have been, but the vast majority of people in 1990 in the DDR did not want that and voted against it during the last Volkskammer elections. The vote was essentially to vote for the parties that were either in favour or against unification under article 21 of the west german constitution (this basically meant that anything west german was right and anything east german was wrong and had to be thrown away w/o discussion). from memory, about 90% of the east german population voted in favour of it and only 10% against it ... and so it happened. that is democracy. Cheers, Torsten.

PS: BTW, I was one of the 10% then ... and this was also the last election that I ever voted in ...

Maybe the new FDJ can ask Angela for help
