The cigarette holder being used by my man Egon is very bourgeoisie, or "bougie" as my kids would say. What else can we conclude about Egon by examining his uniform and the captions?

He is drop dead handsome, reminds me of a young Ralph. P.....

Gents,

In 1950, communists in padded-jackets and carrying PPsh-41s stormed across the 38th Parallel in Korea to kill the running dogs of U.S. capitalism. In a pine forest in Thuringia during the same year, were similar actions being contemplated? The crushed down peaked cap of the last man on the right carrying a rifle with fixed bayonet reminds one of a trooper from the U.S. Civil War era.

Gents,

This could be mistaken for the Russian front in 1945, but its a KVP training trench from circa 1955. How disorienting it must of been for the Wehrmacht veterans scattered amongst the nascent "East German" Army to be clothed in the garb of their former deadly foe and carrying the weapons that might have been used to try and kill them a scant five or six years before.

The bottom picture in particular is evocative of the Eastern Front.
