    DDR Bayonet Practice

    Gents,

I picked up a rather neat DDR wooden practice rifle and spring bayonet at SOS from a walk-in who wandered too near my table. I have seen a couple of these for sale over the years but they all had their wooden magazines shortened so I let them pass. This one was complete and very reasonably priced so I bought it quickly. Ralph will post a couple of photos in a bit.

The wood and steel rifle was an item of issue and according to one source was designated as the Modell 4,853. This seems an odd number to me but may well be correct. The stock and magazine are wood while the removable barrel is steel with a bayonet lug on the top. The canvas sling is adjustable with a steel buckle.

The steel and rubber bayonet was also an item of issue and could be used as a bayonet or as a knife fighting trainer. One source indicates this spring bayonet was designated as the Modell 1985. The hilt has a socket with a spring plunger that attaches to the rifle barrel and locks into place. The blade has another spring plunger with a large rubber tip that allows the blade to retract into the handle upon impact. The rubber hose style grips are red on this bayonet but also came in black.

I wonder if any of the DDR vets who read this forum might have used such equipment in training?

SCHUPO, good looking example of the training rifle. I have two different models, each one has different method of how the sling is attached. I currently only have a photo of the same model you have, my bayonet handel though is in black.

Here is a link to mine, which is in mint condition.

Mine also has a black grip:

                    Ralph,

Yes, the bayonet still works properly although it does show some wear from use. It gives the appearance of quite a few parries and thrusts but no misuse.

                    Pauly,

This sling is slightly different from yours in that the buckle is sewn to one end and the other end is simply whipstitched. Neither end has a metal tip so the loose end is simply tied through the hole in the stock. I have one of the slings with two buckles like yours but this one came on the rifle. If your other rifle is different I would love to know of the differences or see a pix of it.

                    Knuckles,

Yep, I have a black handled bayonet like yours that also shows no use. I can't see any real difference between the two except for the color of the rubber "garden hose" used to make up the handle.

Yes, we did use it a couple of times. The rifles without the bayonnet attachment were usually used on the Sturmbahn (assault course) and we did some close combat practice with the bayonnet attachment. Sometimes person to person, but mostly by attacking some savage rubber tires or similarly vicious stationary targets ... and always accompanied with very loud shouts to put the tires into total submission .... Cheers, Torsten.

A great description of your wooden rifle training regimen Torsten. I am sure the tires were duly cowed by your fierce battle cries.

                        Thanks for sharing your experiences!

                          Genossen,
Genosse torstenbel's killing face and battle cries are still controlled and regulated by the SALT II Arms limitation Treaty.

                            Knuckles,
your's is in a really nice mint condition. didn't saw them for about 15 Yrs.
I have about 20 left, but all used. Sadly I forgot about a Bunch of them, so I sold a lot of "Bayonets" to a friend and then I digged out some Rifles in my storage. so I have only 7 complete and 13 "Rifle only".
What is a reason to shorten the Magazines? Then you have the problem with the weight inside to get the matching weight to the "Real" ones.
BTW: Schupo, what did you paid for your's?

I thought the trainers we see for sale in the states with cut magazines were done this way for ease of transport? I heard from somewhere that they would be easier to ship if they cut half the magazine off. Kind-of destroys the value though.

I got one of mine at the Knob Creek machine gun shoot many years back. A guy had a barrel full of them, wish I would have bought a few more.
