I picked up a rather neat DDR wooden practice rifle and spring bayonet at SOS from a walk-in who wandered too near my table. I have seen a couple of these for sale over the years but they all had their wooden magazines shortened so I let them pass. This one was complete and very reasonably priced so I bought it quickly. Ralph will post a couple of photos in a bit.
The wood and steel rifle was an item of issue and according to one source was designated as the Modell 4,853. This seems an odd number to me but may well be correct. The stock and magazine are wood while the removable barrel is steel with a bayonet lug on the top. The canvas sling is adjustable with a steel buckle.
The steel and rubber bayonet was also an item of issue and could be used as a bayonet or as a knife fighting trainer. One source indicates this spring bayonet was designated as the Modell 1985. The hilt has a socket with a spring plunger that attaches to the rifle barrel and locks into place. The blade has another spring plunger with a large rubber tip that allows the blade to retract into the handle upon impact. The rubber hose style grips are red on this bayonet but also came in black.
I wonder if any of the DDR vets who read this forum might have used such equipment in training?
