Sergeant 08 - This latest batch of photos is outstanding!~

I find the photo in post #108 extra special for the following reasons:
- Potato Mashers, Potato Mashers, Potato Mashers!
- The officer in charge of the formation looks very much like a Wehrmacht officer. He could be mistaken for one at first glance. What's that in his leather holster, an Artilllery Luger or a flare pistol?
- The second man in from the right is wearing rubber wellington boots ("gum" boots in the Northeast U.S.A) in contrast to the "jack boots" worn by his mates.
- The individuals wearing M43 style caps do not have collar tabs on the lapels of their tunics, whereas those wearing brimmed caps do.
- You don't see very many photos of DDR personnel with an MG42 in evidence; the second man in from the left is holding one
- the Kar98ks appear to be missing cleaning rods. Those that have them appear to have three pocket M1909 ammo pouches on the right side of their belt.

All in all, a fascinating photo. I love the portraits as well. For many Americans, the mystery of where Donald Trump's hairstyle originated is finally solved.

Interesting comments on post #108. The missing cleaning rods are afirly easy to explain. Kar98k rifles made in the last months of the war were simplified into what is termed the "KREIGSMODEL". A number of short cuts were made to reduce production time and to save materials in these particular firearms and the elimination of a cleaning rod was one of them. As for the difference in the uniforms, those are very interesting. The picture was obviously taken after the formation of the NVA but probably not long after. What type of side arm the NVA officer is carrying is difficult to say. A long barreled handgun of some type in a break away type holster. Lots of potential for research in this photo!
