Genossen - Any insights you could provide as to the identification and uniform details of the attached two photos would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks - TJ

      Guardian,

These look like very early Vopo/HVA (Hauptverwaltung fuer Ausbildung) uniforms, circa 1949 - 52.

The uniforms and hats are a dark, navy blue color. It's hard for me to tell for sure, but the insignia on the hats look like the Vopo "Starburst" cockade with Schildwappen. (The very first hat insignia had the individual symbols of each State inside the starburst).

The guy in the greatoct is wearing the very early, oversize EM belt buckle with starburst/Schildwappen emblem. The coat is very similar to 3rd Reich era coats with 2 rows of 6 buttons in front (it may even be a recycled 3rd Reich Feuerwehr coat).

Note also the very early M43's with the 3rd Reich style buttons in front rather than the over-the -head flaps of later M43's.

You can see that the women are wearing the same, 4-pocket style tunic as the men wore with double claw, officer style leather belts. They look like EM and NCO ranks - wearing the double claw buckle must have been standard protocol for women.

I believe the shirts were dark blue, worn with a red necktie, though the girl in the middle seems to have forgotten hers. Also interesting is that the girl in the middle seems not have any collar tabs on her tunic.

The collar tabs on her companions' tunics have miniature versions of the starburst on a green, slanted rectangular base.

I'll try to post a few pics from my collection when I have a chance - probably won't be for at least a day or two yet.

Or, if you have Volume 1 of the Walther "Uniformeffekten" books, the collar tabs, shoulderboards & hat cockades are pictured in there.

The early, oversized belt buckle is quite rare and people go crazy for them when they show up on German Ebay.

Rev462 - I have the Keubke / Kunz book, but I couldn't come to any decisive conclusions due to my poor command of the German language.

I look forward to seeing the pics from your collection.

            Thanks again - TJ

David H - Fantastic thread; your collection is the rival of many a museum.

                Thanks!
