I have found the buttons used on chemical suits in a winter FDU.

While not found in a pocket this was found behind the flap of an officers Wintermuetze (dated 1965). It is a needle and thread.

The needle is not discolored.....the scan just came out funny.

Note: The hat in the picture is a CSSR army wintercap. It was used for illustration purposes since the original wintercap is in storage.

      Ralph,

Yes, the bill is dated 1964.

I've found several coins in some of my tunics (even in one of my drillichs), but this is the only banknote I've found so far.

        Jon,

I too have found a needle & thread stuck into the liner of one my visor hats. I'll try to see if I can find it. (Still haven't completely unpacked from a recent relocation.)

Thanks for the follow up. To date I have found nothing in the tunics I own...

            an odd find

I always go through the pockets and have only found ticket stubs until today. Today I was looking at my Grenztruppen General tunic and felt something small in the pocket. To my surprise I found an old pill, much smaller than an asprin. Too bad the bottle with the users name was not inside too!

Given the long hours NVA officers worked, and their reluctance to delegate authority, I wouldn't doubt that a General might want a little pick-me-up pill to help him through his busy day.

Guess one could always take it and find out what it is the hard way...

                      That reminds me....

A friend of mine told me that he found, ummmm, smoke-able drugs of the non-medical variety in a tunic one time. He disposed of the stuff without trying any.

It seems remarkable to me that something like that could make it through "the system" without being discovered, but I guess when you're handling bails of uniforms you can't inspect every one.

If any of the former NVA guys are reading, did you observe any usage of "recreational substances", shall we say?

The little pill was flushed down the john soon after I took the picture, so we'll never know for certain what it was. As far as bails of uniforms, mine was one of two uniforms that this general's driver retained. Both uniforms and the drivers were sold to the individual that I purchased it from. I got the best of the lot.

Finally had a chance to do more digging and found a few more goodies.

Up first is another bandage pack found in the bandage pocket of a Vopo tunic. This one has a paper wrapper, while the one I posted earlier has a light canvas wrapper. Like an idiot I opened this one years ago, but managed to repack it.

In all my police tunics I have found only 2 bandage packs.
