    I have several questions regarding different aspects of B/A.

    Why were there two versions of the Brustbeutel?

    What was carried in the Brustbeutel?

    Where was the folding stove carried?

    Where were the individual can openers carried (not the ones on E******223;ebesteck but similar to the US Military "P-38")?

    Were matches carried in a regular paper box or in a Bakelite/Waterproof container?

    Could you carry more than one Canteen?

    Who was issued with the leather 4-finger gloves (as opposed to the strichtarn 4-finger gloves)?

    How long did the Kragenbindern last?

    Was anything kept in the pistol-holster of the FDU's when a pistol was not being carried?

    Were there regulations against wearing wedding rings at certain times (Manouvers, Parades, etc. etc.)?

    Where did you carry cigarettes (which pocket)?

    What was "unofficially" carried in the Sturmgep******228;cktaschen?

    Does anyone have a picture of the contents of a Schuhputzzeug?



    I am sure I will think of more questions along similar lines later.

    The Leather Brustbeutel was the standard one, the Camo one with Plastic Liner was authorised for the SED-ID only, but mostly used for other stuff.

    The Stove and the "P-38" was normally carried in the Mess Tin, but officially in the part one Fighting load pack. The stove on the bottom of the pack, the "Essbesteck with extra can opener in the Pack on top to the towels.

    Matches were carried in the normal wooden Match-Container, or you had luck to get one of the old Bakelite Containers.

    No 2nd Canteen was authorised.

    Kragenbinden had to be changed every day.

    Nothing was authorised in the Pistol Holster but the Pistol, the 2nd Mag. was in the right Arm pocket of the FDA.

    Unofficially they carried nearly everything in the pack, but don't tell the NCO.

      AR-11: I was allowed wearing the weddinvg rings. This was the only permissible jewellery. In special jobs it was even forbidden waering this rings. But the field it was not forbidden.

      AR-11: Were ever you found a place for them. I one of trhe many cases ever was a little place for the cigarettes. It was not allowed they carrying so that others could see them.
      I carried mine for instance in my map case, right brest pocked (field jacket), in my pistol-bag of the field-jacket, in the magazin-bag...) anywhere...
      I never had a hard-case for them.

      AR-11: What ever you want to carry in them! From buddles with schnapps, cigarettes to tools, books e.t.c.

          Dag: I don't know. Only know/remember one - the Strichtarn with the plastic liner, to carry, membership documents of SED, FDJ

          Dag: Not officially, but there is a lot of space on a tank

          Dag: Usually engineers, but in late 88 we were also issued with them (as tankers)

          How long did the Kragenbindern last?

          Dag: Well, they lasted a long time; problem was, they had to be changed every day and washed/ironed accordingly. There were various ways to use one for two or three days..

          Was anything kept in the pistol-holster of the FDU's when a pistol was not being carried?

          Dag: Not officially, but it was a good place to keep things like sweets etc. especially when on guard duty.

          Were there regulations against wearing wedding rings at certain times (Manouvers, Parades, etc. etc.)?

          dag: Don't know, never smoked. But a friend used to have several packs of "Karo", cheap without filter, on his tank. he could do it because it was one of the "ready-to-roll tanks", locked away.

          Dag: Nothing as far as I know. However, I think there was the possibility to put "personal things" in Teil 2 but I have to check. In tank units, you saw teil 1 and 2 twice a year because they were on stored in the tank (teil 1) and on the company quaretrmaster (Hauptfeldwebel) truck (teil 2)

          Does anyone have a picture of the contents of a Schuhputzzeug?

            Regarding the 4-finger gloves, how many different sizes were there? I have sizes 1 and 2 (neither fit me ) but have seen some marked as size 3 on ebay.

              pretty much everything has already been answered here, re the Brustbeutel, I only know the Strichtarn one and do not know a leather one. I am pretty certain that we were only required to keep the SED membership book in it at all times and not the FDJ membership book. Cheers, Torsten.

                  Another couple of questions about the 4-finger gloves.

                  Did you sew the felt liner in place (at the tips of the fingertips) to keep it from turning inside-out when removing the gloves?

                  Did you ever cut out the felt liner for use during the summer?

                        It has the EVP stamping inside.... also it has no waterproof liner. Other than that I do not know.

                          I do not think that these are military...certainly DDR with the EVP price stamp, but I would have thought bought at the Konsum or HO or whatever, but not military and unlikely to have been sold through the MHO...Cheers, Torsten.

                              again, I cannot remember exactly, but I think that we were not issued the Schuhputzzeug and had to bring our own...I am fairly certain about this...but others may proof my memory to be wrong once again...Cheers, Torsten.
