      Torsten,
I also have a copy of this book and find it excellent. A good companion to the larger book on DDR headgear.

      Cheers,

      Gordon

another book that I recently got. 'Auszeichnungen und Abzeichen der SED'. Brilliant book loads of examples of very early SED pins and badges... I am well pleased with this book...but I have to admit that most of the 1940's and 1950's SED badges I have never even seen before and even less have them in my collection.... Cheers, Torsten.

Btw, I just noticed that my East German reference library is now equal in number to my Third Reich reference library and I would never have thought that possible...

            Torsten,

I have a copy of this book and I agree that it is well worth having in ones library. There is no way that my DDR Reference books will ever catch up to my Third Reich ones. It would be nice if there were that many DDR reference books around.

            Cheers,

            Gordon

Hi Gordon, to be honest, with my Third Reich reference books I weeded out a lot of the useless or too general ones that I have had and I only now keep the useful and comprehensive ones... Cheers, Torsten.

                Gents,

Time to add another reference book to the list. Here is a new book, published in 2006 that I bought in Vienna last weekend. It is in colour and shows both sides of most, unfortuantely all, awards. It covers some I have not sen in other reference books as well. For those of us interested in other areas of German collecting besides the DDR it is an excellent small reference size and covers form the 1870s up to current times. I highly recomend it.

Here is an example of one of the pages. It shows an embroidered badge I have not seen in any other reference material. There several things in this book that are new to me and the colour photos really help a lot.

                  Regards,

                  Gordon

                    Gordon,

How extensive is the coverage of DDR / NVA / MdI medals? All? Most? or some?

                      Michael,

As far as I can tell it cover all medals and awards plus a few things I haven't seen before. For example, on page 221 it shows pictures of both sides of the Clara-Zetkin-Medaille in three different versions. The reverse is interesting because it shows two different types of pins being used on the ribbons. Page 208 shows obverse and reverse pictures of four different versions of the Fliegerkosmonaut der DDR medal. In time I may discover some short comings in this book. They all have them! It isn't chaep at 20 Euros but then again that is what I paid Andreas for book I bought of him when we were in Berlin. The book also lists values for the medals.

                      Cheers,

                      Gordon

I know the earlier edition of the Battenberg and I'm not that comfy with this Book.
It doesn't explain all different version of one Medal well and I think it only has Medals with Ribbons in it. Just a very few Badges and Pins.
It also has lots of TR Medals in it and I see it more like a kind of overall Coverage for all kinds of German Medals but not that good for a pure DDR Collector.

I would stick to the Bartels Editions.

                        Regards
                        Andreas

                          Andreas,

Each to his own I guess. To me it is a very valuable addition to my books and does cover some things that Bartels doesn't. I am not saying this book replaces Bartels but it is worth having, at least in my opinion. Thanks for giving your.

                          Cheers,

                          Gordon

                            Hi Gordon,

Thanks for the response. At EURO 20.00, I think that is somewhat cheap. But for sure, it is another reference source. And at that price, one cannot really quibble.

The soldier on the far right looks a lot like Dan Aykroyd.

                                Books on CD

I have purchased several reference books on CD. They have been very useful. I just wish the seller had more to offer.
