Thanks for posting pictures of your three hole and one hole hangers. This is a good illustration of why we always thought the three hole ones were early and the one hole ones were of a later DDR time. I'd like to ee the hangers Tony posted for comparison purposes.

i'll try to dig out my dagger and get a cell phone photo.the dagger i have has a lot of wear and tear on it .the officer shortened up the hanger
by poking holes in the straps above the original holes and cut the top straps shorter and resewn them.serial#30,XXX. i noticed a navy dagger on US ebay without a hanger, serial #27,xxx without a maker mark.you would think a dagger with a number that low would have a maker mark on the blade considering the same seller has a army dagger serial#72,xxx with three holed hanger and maker marked blade.i talked to MIKE C and when he gets time he'll post photos of his navy daggers serial# in the 20,xxx range,maker marked blades and i believe single hole hangers.

Thanks for the reply. We've discovered over the years that the dagger number and maker mark don't always make a lot of sense. They maker seems to have have used blades marked with their logo on and off again during different periods. Since they used roughly 80 contractors during the life of dagger production perhaps some manufacturers produced blades with a company logo and some didn't. We will probably never solve this particular riddle.

i noticed that a number of navy daggers are serial numbered in the 20,000 range.it's possible that could be sort of a clue in understanding the serial numbering system that they used.

Just purchased this item. Due to their price, I never really planned on buying one of these, but I had some money and saw this offered for sale in the USA.

Serial #80763, manufactured in 1988. It's not an early one but I'm actually very happy to have one complete. These are the items that more than likely increasein value and become harder to find as the years go by.

Of course, now i need a Volksmarine Dolch as well

Hi jkeegan,Congraluations on your first cased DDR dagger set!!!! I already owned 2 different cased DDR dagger sets in my collection. One from mid-1960s and another from 1990. Thanks,James

Nice cased dagger. Is there a lable on the end of the lid with the serial number etc?
Good luck finding a marine officers dagger. They the rarest of the officers daggers excapt for the engraved ones. Admiral's daggers are more common than marine officers.

It isn't in my possession yet but the seller says that the serial number on the dagger, case, and card all match; so, there must be a label on the box that doesn't show in the pictures.
