    Hi Torsten,

    Before we move on to the next Trivia Question, I'd like to stay on the current one and go a little deeper. Obviously I'm not as knowledgeable about East German Polizei memorabilia as its NVA counterpart. I knew the badge was a Polizei Academy Badge, but that was all. Thank you for posting more information.

    I happen to have all three versions/ variants. This is not a Trivia Question. Just a follow up to the one you posted. I think it would be educational for all Forum Members, if you would share with all of us what information you have about each of the three. Would you mind for example providing us with the correct name for each badge, what branch of the Polizei wore each badge, and the name for the Academy for each badge. I would be very appreciative. Thanks.

    In the Interim, I'll prepare my next Trivia Question.

      Okay, hopefully Torsten, when opportunity presents itself, will respond to the question about the three Polizei Academy Badges.

      Meanwhile, it is time to move forward with the Trivia Thread. The next question brings us back to Berlin. Sorry, but there is just too much history in that city to stay away for long.

      On April 24th, the Soviet Forces captured Leibstandarte - SS Adolf Hitler, which was the Kaserne located on Finkenstein Allee in the District of Steglitz where Hitlers Bodyguard Regiment was Headquartered. Because it was in the American Sector, the Soviets were made to vacate it and turn control over to the Americans. It was subsequently renamed Andrews Barracks in honor of Lt. Gen. Frank Andrews, who was wartime Commander of US European Theater of Operations. He was killed in a plane crash in May 1943.

      We're going to try something different this time. The question is going to be a "Riddle". (Rätsel).

      Question: Looking at the picture of the front gate of Andrews Barracks, what is not there, but it really is there?

          Boy, you sure brought some memories back. When I was 14 I lived with my brother for a year between August 1964 and August 1965 in Berlin. He was a US Army lieutenant. We went to Andrews Barracks two or three times and I remember him pointing out some building there and telling me it was some type of SS headquarters. I believe it was the old cadet school building.

            wow, Michael, what have you not got??...

            from left to right, we have ABSOLVENTENABZEICHEN der Offiziershochschule "Artur Becker", then ABSOLVENTENABZEICHEN für zivile Hochschulen and then ABSOLVENTENABZEICHEN der Offiziershochschule Karl Liebknecht....the first one is the scarcest...hope this helps?? Cheers, Torsten.

                Hi Mike,

                The building was in fact SS related. It was the Headquarters for Hitler's personal bodyguard unit, which was a quite large organization in and of itself. And, they were SS. When the US took over it from the Russians, there was a huge German Eagle with Swastika perched on top and centered of the entrance to the main building. There is an "Olympic" size swimming pool located just off to the right of the building, as you face it.

                Anyone figure out the answer to the "Riddle"?

                  no, beats me...my first thought was that there may still be the contours of a Reichsadler on the gate posts (looks like it on the right hand side gate post), but evidently the Reichsadler is no longer there and so could be an answer to your riddle...as most barracks have had that feature on their front gates, but evidently the period photo shows that there never was a Reichsadler on the gate posts and so my thinking is completely off the track here and I have not got a clue what the answer might be...                     Unfortunately, I do not know the house. But it is a riddle and thus one may advise:
                    I think it is under the sentry house in the middle of the place. Are gigantic SS runes there?

                            Okay, Torsten was very close, but then sort of talked himself out of what would have been the correct answer.

                            And Soviet was even more close. So I will concede the next Trivia Question to him.

                            Remember, this was a riddle. What is not there but really is there?

                            The two Reichsadler are in fact not missing. They are still there - even to this day. The Americans, rather than destroy them, added a concrete facade to them, covering them up from view. But, they are still there.

                            If you look closely at the first photograph, you will see that the thickness of the Pillar in front of which the two Stone Sentinels stand guard, has been greatly increased. They are inside.

                            Well done Soviet.

                              Mike, right when you posted your question on the Z / 1968 marking (some time ago) I received this VOPO tunic... and what suprised me was the academy badge which is does not have a polyester coating like most late insignia ; this one seems to be enameled. 1st time I had seen one like this !

                                Yes, I knew about the swimming pool. The pool was the reason my brother and I went to Andrews Barracks in the first place. He wasn't stationed there, he was at the Berlin Brigade HQ, we just went to Andrews to use the pool.
