MAX show pick up - Guards Badge

    Hi guys,

Just back from the MAX show, had a great time seeing many friends and was also able to pick up a few nice badges for my collection. One of my Russian pick ups was this nice Guards Badge. Actually this is my first guards badge, have always found these to be great looking badges from when I first started collecting Russian items. Nice wartime example with nice enamelwork intact and nice fire gilded finish of the wreath. Not a rare badge, but representative wartime example IMO.

I had my eye on a Sevastapol campaign medal at the show as well as its one of the last campaign medals I need for my collection, but luckily my friend Thomas Bendixen was there and saw that the medal eyelet was broken and had been glued back in place! Very well done but close scrutiny saved me $250 thanks to Thomas' eagle eyes. Thanks my friend!

    Tom

Nice badge Thomas, I have two examples of these badges. Both are post war, one from the 1960s and one from the 1980s

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated.

The wreath leaf detail and finish reminds me of the German Honor roll clasps, with its thin brass construction, nice leaf veining and high quality lemony-yellow fire gilding that can be seen in the recesses.

That was typical design for badges from the " Victory Factory " ( my Kindle doesn't allow me to type in Russian ) the makers marks help to get you a good idea of when the badge was made. It is interesting to note during the 80s the Soviet Government shifted production at the factory to product Tourist-y items in an attempt to get money from collectors and foreign tourists. The factory also struck two examples of East German reproduction Parachute Rigger and Diver Qualispange.
