    Paul....
The question is interesting, because we as collectors do tend to associate the color of green on a flag with the Border Guard.
However, the VDV flag is designed to represent the descent of the airborne forces from the upper blue sky to the green earth below.

I have one of those Bill.

I'm not sure mine is dated, but its cotton weave like yours and like all the other Soviet flags I have - unlike the more modern nylon ones.

I've always assumed it was early nineties - I've never seen this flag used in Soviet times, in modern RF it is used a lot by the VDV.

I'll have to drag mine out and take another look!

Yes, the current Russian VDV still uses the same design, but without the red star. And don't hold me to this, but I'm pretty certain that the example that I have is wool.

It could be wool, I may just be an idiot

As for the red star... you could be right - can't remember if its on mine or not.

Still curious about the usage of the flag though - I've never seen it in any photos, but of course the logo was on vehicles and all sorts.

The usage is a matter of interest to me, also.
Given the size of the flag I have assumed that it would fly outside of an airborne base headquarters building.

Here is the current Russian airborne forces flag as displayed in the Central Museum of the Armed Forces in Moscow.

While it is stitched rather than printed, like virtually all of the current Russian military flags that I've seen, it's made of some sort of synthetic material.

Here you go Bill, this subject interested me enough for me to take a rumage in my war store.... please excuse the shocking photos!

                My flag is approx 2m x 1m

                Looks like this:

                Date looks like this:

It might look nylon in those photos, but its not - its the same cotton/wool/whatever as all my other Soviet flags - and I have a few - nothing exotic and made of velvet though lol

I had some enjoyment from opening the flag box, so this has been a cool thread for me 8)

Found this example online - a sewn version on parade.

Hmmm but those are Russian Federation VDV, not Soviet VDV.

The uniform cut, the sleeve patches and the beret shape and of course Romanov colours on the cockade show this

Very true, they are Russian Federation.
And yet, they wear the Soviet-style Guards badge.
There seems to have been quite a bit of "carry over" of Soviet-era material into the Russian Federation, so it may well be that a new parade-quality flag, without the red star, had not been made as of the time of the photograph.

Yes, plenty of hangovers to start with but largely gone now. They've been through a few different variations with stuff based on Usa ideas and also napoleonic era parade dress over the years. Probably quite hard to ditch the obvious pride they had for victory in the great patriotic war and Soviet military might though, despite political reform.

That's still"modern" use of the flag though, I want to see Soviet era use of it...
