However, this photo is from the RIA Novosti site, showing a rally in February of 1991. Not an "official" formation, but undoubtedly still Soviet period.

Hate to be a party pooper Bill, but those flags from 1991 are not the same as yours and mine... white parachute on the 1991 ones...

              Oh yes, I know.
Just as the photo in the post by Ben is a variant as well.

Really, the easiest thing to do would be for someone to write to the military attache at the Russian Embassy in their country and pose the question as to the specific use for the flag which, again, I'm virtually certain was a base flag. I recently obtained confirmation about the identity of a table medal as an award of the German BND (the equivalent of the CIA for the Federal Republic of Germany) by sending photos to the German Embassy in Washington. They, in turn, had sent them to the BND in Berlin, and a member of the BND's historical section sent me a very nice letter confirming the identification of the medal and providing some history about it. In fact, I was advised that the historical section of the BND was preparing an article for publication about the medal, and they very kindly informed me that they would send me a copy of the article when it was published.

But since I don't plan on keeping the airborne flag for too much longer, I suspect that it will have left my hands by the time that I reach "Write to Russian Embassy about VDV Flag" on my list of things to do.

Thinking of selling it? Tsk! There are only two known in the world

I have asked my friends in the Motherland to see what they can find out for me. Your post certainly has raised my interest in something which hasn't seen light of day in my collection for quite some time.

Here is one from a Naval Guards unit! I wonder which unit flew this one? It is a small version, most likely from a small boat or something of the like. It is a 1989 make. As you can see, the naval flag has the orange and black St George ribbon under the hammer and sickle.

The second flag is what is flown when the Naval Commandant(highest ranking Soviet Naval Officer) visits a unit.
