Some Soviet Flags and Banners !

I've always liked flags and banners, and the quality and design of the Soviet material is exceptional, I think.

Here are a few for your viewing pleasure!

This first piece is an award banner from one of the Soviet Republics. I have to admit that I don't recall which one at the moment. What the scans fail to convey id that the "Factory" design is done completely in silver and gold metallic bullion thread. It is an incredible piece to see!

    P.S....
If anyone can read the flag, let me know!

This is what I think is an incredible award flag from World War II for an aircraft depot on the Leningrad front.

        The embroidery is truly stunning!

          Translated....

From the commander of the Air force of the Lenningrad Front
and the regional committee of the aviation workers union,
          to
the best aviation repair depot of the Leningrad Front Air Force
          for winning the Socialist competition.

          And on the opposite side:

          Death to the German invaders
More planes and engines to the front lines

An interesting Stalinist period flag with an association to the Red Cross.

Again, i'm at a loss as to the translation here, so if anyone can help me out...

THIS is the side that needs the translation! The side pictured above I've pretty much learned.

This is a long banner, about 10 to 12 feet long, in a silk material.

It is red, with a portrait of a young Mikhail Suslov. Born in 1902, he died in 1982, and was buried next to Stalin.

Suslov was a member of the Supreme Soviet and the Presidium. In WW II he was a member of the military council of the North Caucasian front and was in charge of organizing partisan activity.

Ultimately, after a long career as a senior party member he would hold two Heroes of Socialist Labor, five Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, and the Order of the Patriotic War, 1st Class.

The exact use of the banner is something about which I'm not certain. It has a sleeve for suspending it on the end, but it runs along the shorter edge near the portrait. In other words, if you hung it up by putting a rod through the sleeve, the portrait would be on its side.

                  Curious. But neat!

                      The two "Big Boys"....

The reverse is plain. note that it would be displayed as it is here, the flag going out to the viewer's left. This came with another flag, same size, make, and quality, with simply the seal of the Soviet Union on one side, and blank on the reverse. That flag displays out to the viewer's right when open. So it seems that they were intended to be displayed together.

A large "Banner of the Red Banner".

The piece has exceptional, raised embroidery.

Thanks to Doug Drabik for info on the likely use of this banner: As a display piece in a city that, as a city, had been awarded the Order of the Red Banner.

Hi Bill, these are simply stunning. I am very impressed with the quailty of the factory flag. I am not sure of the language; it looks like it might be from one of the Baltic States? I am sure Rick will be able to help you on this

How do you display/store you flags? I am often at a loss as to how to display the few flags I have in my collection.

                              Thanks for posting these.
                              Cheers, Ade.
