    Russian Parachutist: Afghanistan 1979-89

For your review, I am posting at the request of C.O.Sarge nine pictures of one of his recent projects, the summer tunic with field gear for a Russian parachutist during the invasion of Afghanistan. Correctly equipped with an AKS-74U assault rifle and wearing on his chest the jump qualification badge with the pendant denoting one jump, he is ready for the Mujahideen. All comments and questions are welcome.

Thats the M88 pattern jacket, not worn in '79

The hat in the first pic is a field hat, as such it should have either a subdued star or no star at all.

Normally, I wouldnt expect to see a mixture of subdued collar devices, subdued field red rank tape AND Guards n jumpbadges on the same uniform, particularly with the M88.

Generally, the VDV used the AKS74, not the SU. The SU was of limited use unless you were "up close and personal". Is that one of the Tula "factory replicas" ?

                            Comrades,
The wear on the this Complex looks good, the VDV, (Urrah!!,Urrah!!,Urrah!!) used to wear a AK74 Weapon System magazine pouch behind the two cell pouch of the RD54 Equipment Complex as part of they Fighting Order, the E tool is worn next to this, or in the Backpack blade down, if you follow the ROTA 9 Historical Document.
The M88 needs a collar liner.

Very nice, I used to collect the soviet afghan stuff and had a nice collection at one time.

You might suggest that your friend ROLL the beret badge. The vdv guys after the first year of service rolled the badge to let people know they were vets. By rolling I mean basically curving the beret badge so that is looks rolled from side to side, I'd post a pic but apparently I can't figure out how to post a pic.

A nice addition would be the light blue striped t-shirt / tank top the paras wore all the time. And of course the dark blue striped t-shirt was adopted and worn by ALL afghan vets.

I would remove the guards badge and the para badge as well as the red tabs.

                              Nice AK.

                              Chris
