    Candid photos - Baden-Wuerttemberg Bereitschaftspolizei March, 1967

    Hello Friends,

I thought I'd start this weekend off right with some March 1967 photos of what I believe to be B-W BEPO pictures taken during and after initial entry training in March 1967.

If my identification is wrong, and that has been known to happen, I'm sure my friends in the WAF will show me the error of my ways.

I lived in the BRD in 1987-1990 and again from 2001 - 2004. I must say that I found the green and tan color scheme worn by the SCHUPOs most unappealing and was glad to see the transition to blue take place just as I was leaving.

I must further confess that I found some of these photos, especially the black and white ones depicting the BEPOs in peaked caps, belted long coats, and calf-length boots, a little jarring. I can only imagine what it would have been like for a foreign visitor to encounter these gents in the immediate post-war years. Of course, in my own country right now, civil-police relations are at a very low point. Let us hope this changes soon.

Be that as it may my friends, I hope we can learn about our hobby from these photos, some of which are in technocolor!

I look forward to reading your comments as always and expect my knowledge of the BEPO to rise to unheard of heights.

We'll start off with formation photo.

    All the best,
    TJ

A classic set piece photo angle.

Some interesting things to note; the panzer gray / police blue ammo can, Bundeswehr model machine gun utility pouch, and the MG42/59, MG1, or MG3 which is just visible.

Note too that gunnery practice is undertaken wearing dress uniform vice fatigues (albeit on a very nice mat to lay on...)

A great photo for uniform details but somewhat dismaying to see law enforcement professionals fooling around with fire arms. Unloaded guns kill more people that any other kind.

The G1s have a fair amount of wear on them. I wonder if they were passed on to the Lander from BW or BGS stocks? Is the officer second from right holding a P1?

Great looks at cap cords and rank insignia. Note too what appears to be an entrenching tool held by the officer second from the left.

Graduation photo. The signatures of the graduates are written on back of the picture.

Note the vehicle in the background. The paint scheme looks to be of wartime vintage, but of course it is not.

Scheisse! We can't see the helmet!

On to the black and white photos.

Note the fatigue uniforms, breadbags and what appears to be a flashlight worn by the officer on the right.

Good look at the rank insignia and holes in the uniform to accommodate belt hooks.

                A few field photos.

The guys in formation evoke a wartime feel for this WAF member.

Is the vehicle in the right rear a Unimog? I'm guessing a Munga for the jeep type vehicle in the foreground.

This is a great picture for uniform details.

Note the single G1 twin mag pouch and holster. Note rank insignia on the collar points. Are those canvas blue y-straps holding up leather belts?

What else can you pick out?

Rain coats, dispatch rider coats or great coats? Again, for me, evocative of an earlier era.

As we will see, this proved be a popular location for a snap shot.

I found this photo very atmospheric.

Can anyone identify the kaserne from the building in the background?

                              Last one!

I'll close with this photo of a dismal BEPO under canvas.

I hope you enjoyed these photos and can't wait to read your comments.

                              Have a great weekend.
