    Neidersachsen Jagdaufseher

    Gentlemen,

I discovered an interesting cap yesterday while searching for something else entirely. It is an M43 style cap for Neidersachsen Jagdaufseher (Game Warden). This is the first time that I have ever done research in this area and I am not sure that I understand it very well so all and every comment/picture would be welcome.
Game Wardens in Germany would appear to be quite different that those in North America where they enforce mainly hunting and fishing regulations of states/provinces. German Game Wardens seem come in several different flavours. Some work for the state and some work for private organizations giving hunting lessons etc. I am going to stop hear before I make any big mistakes about the Neidersachsen Jagdaufseher and those of other states. Please fill us in on what I find an interesting area that I know little about.

    Regards,

    Gordon

here is a cap of a Neidersachsen Jagdaufseher. In the centre of the top of the antlers, although they are not legible in this picture, will be the letters LJV with the J being larger than the other two letters. You will see that in one of the pictures that I post. All states seem to use the same type of badge/logo for the Jagdaufseher but use their own state crest or special logo for this group in the badge.

Since many hunting clubs wear uniforms in Germany I found it almost impossible to tell who was simply a hunter and who was a Jagdaufseher. The text with the picture of the guys on the steps says they have just finished a two year course for Jagdaufseher. I am having trouble uploading other pictures I have found of uniformed members of Neidersachsen Jagdaufseher because I can only copy them as HTML files and theses files can not be uploaded to the WAF so this is all for now.

      LJV stands for Landesjagdverband.

        Gordon,
this is a very complicated subject. From what I understand, Jagdaufseher have no specific uniform, it depends on who provide them (such as hunting clubs), then they may wear one. They have often some distinctions for members who are trained Jagdaufseher like number or colour of Eicheln worn. There are also Jagdaufseherverbände, who have own uniforms. Almost all seem to wear some form of the Waldbluse as dress uniform, with various work jackets in the field. The insignia for the cap in your picture appear to be for the Landesjägerschaft Niedersachsen (LJN). The Verband der Jagdaufseher Niedersachsen e.V. has slightly different insignia.

From my understanding: if the Jagdaufseher has training as professional hunter (Revierjäger, Revierjagdmeister, etc.) or forester, police powers can be exercised. If not, only where reasonable suspicion exist and only limited. There are also "uncertified" Jagdaufseher employed by some property owners, but these have almost no more authority than average hunter and are more caretakers. As there is no exact equivalent to "game wardens" in Germany, many protective measures related to hunting taken over by professional hunters and Förster (who receive hunter training) as well. But there seem to exist much overlap between them, which make it so confusing.

        Regards
        Klaus

          Klaus,

Thanks for taking the time to respond to this thread. I suspected that there was no specific in most cases but in some there is. In many instances they wear a sweater that is also common among hunters. See the picture below. Here is another picture showing a Jagdaufseher graduation class after a 2 year training course. They wear tunics virtually the same as Forestry officials but their title translates into English as "gamekeeper. There training took place here http://www.jaegerlehrhof.de/startseite/

As you say in your posts, a very confusing subject.

          Regards,

          Gordon

yes, I have seen these jackets. Similar to some work jackets worn by modern foresters. Have also found a few photos with the Baschlikmütze you posted in first post. Wish, that I could see the patch in second photo, but according to the website, these are graduates of training for Revierjäger, so probably wear uniform of the LJN and not specifically Jagdaufseher. It appear, that the former can work as the latter (but not requirement).
