    Modern Combat Rations Comparison

Team - This past weekend the New York Times ran an interactive comparison of combat rations used by select NATO/ISAF forces in Afghanistan.

Check out the link below and see how the Bundeswehr's Einmannpackung Typ II compared against the infamous U.S. Army MRE (Meals Rejected by Everyone).

    All the best - TJ

Cool article! I like the Italian tooth brushes the best

I've eaten the French, Norwegian, and US meals. Not bad. The French one I had was actually issued to Belgian troops, but it was almost the same thing. The only difference is the Belgians put about 2 pounds of candy in it

      Vegemite!

The 'ultimate weapon' of the Aussie Digger!

If you can eat Vegemite, you can do anything.

      Cheers,

Ugggggghhhhhhhhhh. Years of therapy down the drain after successfully blocking out all memories of Vegemite.

I got an Aussie MRE years and years ago. I tried the Vegemite tube after the infamous mention of it by Men At Work. I must admit, I really don't understand how it can be eaten. Seems the best thing for it is to water proof boots or use as an insect repellant.

            Hi Steve,

"I must admit, I really don't understand how it can be eaten."

Goes great on toast, with butter (for Breakfast). Can be added to beef stock to make excellent gravy, as well. In the 'Bush' we usually put it on crackers (my personal preference is SAO biscuits).
Has been a 'staple' of the Aussie 'Rat pack' for as long as I can remember (1950's, I believe).

I remember sharing some of mine with a group of US Marines on exercise at Shoalwater Bay back in the '70's. They thought they were 'real mem'........the Vegie sorted them out real quick!

            Cheers,

            Hugh

In the 80's, I saw a Brit ration pack that listed "Britburger" and something with 'spangles'

Can anyone tell me what the 'Britburger' was?

When heating the MRE don't forget to, as the instructions say, prop the MRE on "a rock or something".

Britburger sounds like a ground beef patty of some type?

Spangles was a brand of boiled sweets, manufactured by Mars Ltd in the United Kingdom from 1950 to the early eighties.

                        Hugh,

I would make that a CAPITAL IT. I guess I can't do everything because I could not eat vegemite!

                        Regards,

Never heard Britburger but the Sweets were stamped boiled sweets.
The 80's were my time in the Grunewald in Berlin and I never missed a Maneouver of the brit. or US Forces. I think some month I had more Rations than "Normal" Food. Must see where I have my old Ration packs. (Brit and US) GP, Arctic, C-Rat., MRE etc.
Maybe the first MRE's are interesting for the Collectors.

                            Hello Gordon,

It's an acquired taste. I've eaten it all my life, so it holds no surprises for me.

I'm sure that this one, small, failing in your skills will not serve you ill.

                            Regards,

                            Hugh

The beverage powder of the German EPA is actually pretty good when you mix it with vodka.
It makes you warm and fuzzy.
