    Hi Seewolf,
If my comments were taken as an argument, they were not intended that way.

As to the tunic, I simply believe the evidence will not support this being a Bundesmarine item. I will offer the following as points that can be viewed from the other perspective:

    - Tunic BM style
I would offer that a double-breasted dark blue jacket is worn by nearly all navies, as well as a wide variety of merchant and civil nautical agencies. I would disagree with BM style as it does not present with the correct configuration of buttons. British, Dutch, French, and Danish navies all wore 8 button jackets, along with WSP and HM.

    - 16mm Kolbenringe very early BM style
The 16mm rank lace was used by the BM until 1972 (when replaced by 14mm). It can be seen on WSP and Handelsmarine tunics into the 1990s (the last dated examples that I have seen) and might still be in use.

    - 8 buttons instead of the usual 6 buttons
Correct configuration for WSP and Handelsmarine. Not correct for Bundesmarine.

    - typical BM tailor
Many tailors provide unifoms to many agencies. I have several Handelsmarine caps made by the same makers (and same label) as Bundesmarine caps. I would have expected a "KleiderKasse" marking on the label.

    - made 6.11.62
Clearly a postwar uniform -- the date is/was never in question.

    Assmann buttons:
provides knöpfen to the military as well as many other agencies.

My point here is that there is nothing about the uniform indicating is belongs to any particular organization. We have a naval-style jacket with 16mm rank lace from 1962. No name to attach to a Bundesmarine, Handelsmarine, or Wasserschutzpolizei officer.

If you had posted photos of the jacket with just 6 buttons visible, I would have suggested Bundesmarine.

Considering there are at least two known German agencies (HM and WSP) that wore/wear naval-style jackets with 8-button fronts; were in existence during the time period this uniform was produced; and does not match the pattern of uniform worn by the Bundesmarine in the 1960s. What is the likely purpose of such a uniform? A fashion statement by a relatively low-ranking officer or the uniform of another agency?

Remove the line star and how do you view the jacket? Here is the current version of the WSP uniform
Notice still the same 8-button jacket as before WW2.

I offer the above for discussion purposes.

    Chris

      Gentlemen,

To me this is a tunic of the Handlesmarine. If you look back a few weeks you will see a thread that I started on one of these uniforms. The tunic that I posted appears to be that of a sea going communications specialist so bears that kind of sleeve insignia instead of the star of a sea going officer. Handlesmarine officers have traditionally worn very similar insignia to that of the German navy of the time.

      Regards,

      Gordon

        Hi Gordon,
Agree completely. I did some additional research and came up with a site showing some of the basic Handelsmarine badging. Indeed quite a bit in common with the Bundesmarine.

For reference, your thread on your HM uniform:
        http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=440047

        Your uniform:

From this website, it would appear your sleeve insignia is for a ships electrician officer.

          Sprogcollector,

Thanks for the URL of the web site for the HM insignia. The Electrical officers insignia shown there is a little different than on my tunic but that is understandable. With the large number of commercial shipping firms in Germany there was/is bound to be slightly different insignia in use by different firms. While they tended to follow the insignia of the German navy of the day they were not unanimous in their choice of insignia. Hence my quest to find the name of the firm whose house flag is on the cap that came with the tunic. Thanks again for your help.

          Regards,

          Gordon

Do any of the HM, or private merchant companies, have the "line officer star"?

Handelsmarine (HM) bridge officers wear the star. For all practical purposes, their jackets appear the same as Bundesmarine/Deutsche Marine line officers except for having an 8-button jacket.

Instead of ranks, the structure for bridge officers appears to be:
              4 x rings = Captain
              3 x rings = 1st Officer
              2 x rings = 2nd officer
              1 x ring = 3rd officer

Thanks at all for your replies, much appreciated

It really seems that i have here a HM tunic but now only one thing puzzles me.....it came with an added function badge ( Führungspersonal) and on the place where that one has been i have a shadow. So it seems it has been longer there

That is the last question about that tunic....strange that BM and HM only differs by the number of buttons ....

In that case i think i´ll sell that one...does not fit to my collection in that case. Seems i better stay at my very early 57er awards

Many thanks to all for your input and work, really much appreciated

I don't have an answer for the traces of the Führungspersonal badge. Some theories: Tailor displayed this uniform with this badge? Even some brief exposure to sunlight with the badge in place would result in a shadow.

I'm don't have enough knowledge of HM badging to say if any BW awards could be worn by HM officers??? My guess would be they were not allowed but who knows?

A bit off-topic but I'd always wondered if the occassionally seen Kriegsmarine jacket with 8 buttons were from former Handelsmarine officers brought into the Kriegsmarine?

In any event, you have a very nice looking HM jacket. As you stated, you didn't have to pay much for it so selling should be relatively easy.
