Thanks - if you cannot find any examples in your collection, a guide to the colors, ie shirt= light grey / pants= dark grey would help. I am building a Tamiya M41 Walker Bulldog as a German unit for my entry in my IPMS club project. My research has indicated that not only equipment but uniforms were supplied by the US Army.
How do I post images from my home computer - the program seems to want a web URL to post?
Thanks for your assistance or any other member of this thread in this project.

Steve,
There are two ways to post pictures. The easiest is to become a member at US$25.00 per year but you are probably not interested in that. The other way is to use a host.
The M41 was used in the BW from 1956 to qpprox 1966 so you would be looking at uniforms worn from 56 through 59. I helped a friend write a book on the early years of the BW and I will contact him re what would be the best colour for your uniforms.

Gordon

Gordon,
Thanks for your information. You are correct on the time frame I am interested in depicting.
Thanks for the information on the photos - was looking to be able to share photos when the M41 build is complete.
Look forward to what ever information you and your friend can provide.

Steve

Steve,
let me jump in on this point ...
First thing is that the GErman Army used lots of stuff donated/sold by the US Army but within these purchases were no uniforms. Everything was "special", even stuff looking like US stuff (and even WWII GErman) was out of new German production...
Depending on my archives you have three possibilities to dress your crew
Timeframe 1956 to early 1957: The so called Arbeitsanzug (Working uniform), an olive drab HBT dress, often combined with the blue-grey shirt of the dress uniform. Headdress: The charcoal grey cap in the M43 stile or the olive green cap for the working dress.
Timeframe 1957 - 1960: The splinter camo battle dress in the infantery version was worn by all kinds of armoured crews too with an olive green field shirt worn beneath. Headgear: As before or - as seen in a educational film made 1957 - especially in the recce branch using the M41 - a charcoal grey side cap.
Timeframe 1960 - 1966: The armoured branch was now equipped with olive coveralls specially designed for tank crews, also they were given berets (with a hard inlay as protective cap or without for other duties)
And as the recce guys are always special the often wear a yello scarf ... or no issue boots ...
Colour pictures out of this era are more then rare, also they are most often faded / changed colour. The best way to get the colours is going through the uniform threads in this sections looking for modern pictures of the mentioned equipment ...

JEns

Jens,
Thanks for the update, especially when broken down by time. You mentioned the "hard hat" beret - I have seen a photo of this head gear - looks like it would have been awkward to wear.
Was there a time when the US style leather helmet w/goggles would have been used by the armor troops? This is how the tank commander is molded.
Regards and thanks for the information and guidance.

The good thing about that is that I took the chance to add some new found pictures - even a nice colour photo of a splinter-dresses group - to the final selection.
So really fresh news will follow up sooner than later!
