Hi there.................is there any good website(s) that give a good over view of all(or most) the BRD(west germany) army uniforms???????

when I do search with BRD & Bundeswehr....................it only give me the present germany unifrom and e-bay auction.............

Please help!!!!!

I just want to c the difference between NVA and BRD(am I typing this wrongly??!!!)

It's seem that that the German army tradition did not quite preserved in the BRD.......................(anyway I haven't seen much of them)

When You click on "Die Uniformen und Rangabzeichen" You will get a good overview about today's german army.

The early Bundeswehr uniforms were much influenced by the US-army, however they had a jacket which was a bit like the assault-gunner jacket of WW 2.

The east german NVA took over the uniforms from the Wehrmacht and in fact they used the same rank system, same colors for branches and even the experimental model 45 steel helmet was introduced.
A bit of a joke of history that those who were strong anti-fascists took over much of the Wehrmacht traditions.

Hello again,

I have here a short overview abd comparison between early Bundeswehr and NVA. I do not claim that it is complete, just what I can contribute.

1.) Early Bundeswehr uniform:


You see the double row of buttons and the short jacket which is a bit "inspired" by the Wehrmacht Panzer jacket. Color of this uniform was a dark-grey.

2.) Another shot of same uniform:



Left is an officer, right a NCO ( KpChef and Spiess of one unit )
Note the large baggy pants. These were awful.

3.) Second type of uniform introduced in 1957



A four pocket tunic was introduced in 1957 but you could see the older short jackets up until the mid sixties. Rank insignia for enlisted men was worn on the sleeve below the divisional symbol.

7.) Early Bundeswehr uniform with collar insignia



These collar insignia indicates branch of service (infantry here) and were inspired by US insignia.
Later the Bundeswehr switched back to the old Litzen system and used colors for branch of service, just like in the Wehrmacht.

12.) The camo tents were inspired by the rare Leibermeister pattern:



13.) The Bundeswehr used the old MG 42 og the Wehrmacht in a modified version (first as MG-1, later MG-3)



14.) First model rifles, G-1, later the G-3 became the standard rifle



15.) Machine pistol was for a very long time the UZI.
