Brass
Brass and copper was (and is) a common metal used when plating is to be applied.
Depending on the time in the "nickel or chrome" bath, relates to the thickness of plate left.
In some instances, "flash plating" is applied, where the copper or brass item is literally dipped into the bath and out again.
This can lead to poor adhesion, and the plating can wear off in a very short period of time.
So, the point being, that some of the newey stud caps could have been made on a "Friday afternoon shift" ... and thus got mixed with a better batch, and hence some stud caps have worn through the plate, and some have maintained the plate.
