You guys should check out the web site for The Queen's Royal Lancers. Its been a few years since I built it.....

    www.qrl.uk.com

The 5th Irish Lancers use the colour green from their regimental badge. When both the 16th and the 5th were amalgamated the idea was to combine elements of uniform AND colours from both Lancer units badges into one. Although the intention was to do the same with 17th/21st they didnt hit it off as it was originally intended. The writing was to be made yellow to represent the 21st.

My greatest military honour is the fact that the QRL now go into action with a regimental 'motto' I designed........for I am not just a badge collector but a badge designer.

    Steve.

Is that the skull etc set on crossed lances...............?

And an afterthought - please tell me you're not responsible for the mess tin worn by the RRGWB (or whichever way round the initials go)?

I take it this is the badge, (without the regimental association scroll). Nice work.

Yep, the skull and lances is my work or the 'motto' as they call it in the regiment.

The badge does look a lot better when it is larger as the shading is clearly visable.

Colours were hand picked by the Colonel and a Captain of the regiment.

Their first badge was, well I thought more of a cartoon like skull. This one in my opinion is more gritty. The lances are also to scale.

I dont think the final result was that bad considering I was only 22 at the time.

Getting back on track.........if you do want to research the fellow who your Div signs belonged too I suggest you write a letter to Captain Holtby at the museum. The address is on the web site.

They're not wearing this as a cap badge are they?
I've only seen this design as decals on vehicles.
I suppose if a Captain was involved along with the CO he / she'd be the Adjutant?

A seperate subject, but you'd be the man to know about the Sgt's arm badge of the 4th Lincolns - can you tell me about this badge & its variations at all, & if it's still worn by any surviving unit?

The badge the QRL wears now is the old 17/21st badge. Staybrite silver if I am not mistaken?

The badge you are talking about is the brass imp for the 4th Battalion with two rear fixing lugs?

I will be honest and say Ive never seen a period photo of an NCO wearing one. The cloth imp is worn by members of the home guard (lots of those on Ebay recently). As I have seen no evidence to suggest 4th Battalion WW1, I think these badges are in fact home guard.

My grandad between the wars served with A Company of the 4th Battalion. He cannot remember any such badge during the early 1930's.

I realise there are reference books out there that claim the badges are 4th Battalion...........it is never safe to assume until there is proof.

If you buy a copy of my book you wont see any of the men in the photos of the 4th wearing one.

I am not always right about the Lincolns...........and I certainly dont claim to know everything about them. For example recently a post card surfaced on Ebay with a WW1 Lincolns soldier wearing cloth slip-ons. That is something I have never seen before.

                  Steve.
