You'll have trouble persuading some that the Tyneside Irish badge is a S/T & not a cap badge - Jim for one , I think.

I've only ever seen it worn as a S/T in photos, not that I've seen many of those.

Westlake in his book on Kitchener Battalions shows a good photo of the harp being worn as a S/T.
I think I have a really good photo of a tyneside irish bn solider which slearly shows the shoulder title with the harp and scroll and just as importantly the usual northumberland fusilers greanade bacdge on his hat. I will try and dig it out.

As an aside, how good is Cox's? I have'nt got a copy, I was going to buy one years ago but a few different dealers advised me not to bother as it was full of inaccuracies. Maybe they were just trying to keep me in the dark, it looked like a fairly good book to me, it covered a lot of ground.[/QUOTE]

I forgot to mention that one thing is excellent in Cox's book is the chapter on schools and OTCs that K&K lack.

I've got copies of that chapter, though I don't collect those badges - would'nt say no to them at the right price though.

I'd better get the book - should've got it a couple of decades ago.

Here's one from Dads actual wartime aquired collection (WW2) it's like your last one, but the mane and letters just differ. As does the nags stance.

He was in airforce for 20 odd years straight after the war, so he does have the odd bit of post war stuff (well I have it now), from the far east regiments, Korea and Suez era. It depended on his landings I guess He got these bits of course for my elder brother.....and when he was killed , I got them back in '74. I was two.

But he swears this is early war aquired, he got it from Grantham when the troops were on exercise they popped into the farm for a cup of tea. The poor bugger was sent there after the Blitz Only to be surrounding by crashing RAF pilots in training.

Interesting. This one is different to the Kent Cyclists and Kent Yeomanry ones that are in K&K and Cox's books. I think that both these units were no more in 1920 as the cyclists were disbanded and the Yeomanry became RA. It is a very common pattern that is often for sale on ebay as restrikes and I always suspected that it was a differnt pattern as it was produced off a modern die. However it is shown in Cox's book as being a schools cap badge. It would be nice to confirm the date your father collected it.
