The shape of the helmet made it difficult to press. Early British para helmets ( like early American M1s ) were particularly prone to stress cracking. Eventually the Americans discovered a better pressing method and the Brits copied it. Later batches of HSAT helmets didn't suffer so badly.

Forgot to say - obviously the shells didn't have cracks in them when they left the factory - the cracks came later with age and poor handling

This is a new one on me. I have not seen stress cracks on a Brit Para helmet before.
