Rare find or a dud? H.M.S. ARK ROYAL

I was out garage sailing (no pun intended as you read on) and i came upon a sale at a local church and sticking out of one of the bins was this H.M.S. Ark Royal sea cap. They asked 50 cents and i gave them a five for it. After looking through some pictures of the two ark royals i cant find any matches in style the strangest part being that the cap is missing its two breathing holes at the sides and ribbon at the tie. As for inside in pen is written NAW and the distinctive arrow(also in pen). I'm at a complete loss as to what i have any help is welcomed and greatly thanked.

Id say thats its not a ww2 issued item, if im not wrong the name was passed on to several ships over the years. Pete/

the only thing that gets me is if you look at both ww2 ark and 80's ark they both have breathing holes at the side (2) this does not.

Pete your dead on the last one was decomed in 2011.

HMS Ark Royal: British aircraft carrier launched in 1937 that participated in World War II and was sunk by a U-boat in 1941.
HMS Ark Royal: an Audacious-class fleet aircraft carrier launched in 1950, decommissioned in 1979
HMS Ark Royal: an Invincible-class aircraft carrier, launched in 1981, decommissioned in 2011

Did the RN had cap tallies named after ships during WW2??

I believe they used HMS tallies instead of ship named tallies for security reasons, the Germans did the same, used Kriegsmarine instead of named tallies

PzrWest is correct: no named tallies were worn during hostilities. Either Kriegsmarine, HMS for Brits, RCN for Canadians and so on. I know that doesbn't help much with this hat except to exclude it as war time issue. Sorry!

Would there be any way of telling if it's pre war as the Ark Royal was laid down before the war? Would it be worth black light testing it?

                      Cheers

                        .

pre war the name would have a dot after it

                        i.e. hms ark royal.
                        regards Will

What era were "pusser" caps issued? When I was in the sea cadets in the early 60's I was issued what was called a "pusser" cap. It wasn't made of the plastic covered white material but was plain un-coated cloth that I had to apply white webbo to the top. Inside it had no red/white.green but had a dark blue liner with a hole in the center and a draw string. It didn't have the saddle shape of the regular caps and was flat across the top

Cadets might be a possibility maybe? I tried looking but couldn't find any ark royal cadet units active or ever existing.
