Sorry, but the Cherry Pickers were the 11th Hussars, not the 17th/21st lancers. Best source is "How the Regiments got their Nicknames", by Tim Carew, published in 1974 by Leo Cooper. Supposedly, a detachment of the 11th were captured during the Peninsular War, while picking cherries. One has to take many of theses stories with a large grain of salt. I always liked the nickname of the Royal Indian Service Corps (RIASC), supposedly given by it's social superiors in more elite Indian Army regiments: Really, I am So Common.
