I suspect that the contempt most Japanese soldiers felt towards POWs - not true samuri if they surrendered - meant that other than watches and cigarette lighters, they took fewer souvenire, in the form of badges and so on, that would german or Italian captors. Just a thought. OTOH, as Alan points out, conditions in the Japanese camps were so grim that few of the Allied POWs managed to keep much of their kit intact till liberation.
