Whatever the reasons, whatever the history between the two, it eventually ended up in Marriage a short time later in 1920.

There is a good chance that Walter must have met Rose Isabel in England probably whilst convalescing and that is the reason he wanted to return straight away.

 Walter makes his way back to London where on the 2<sup>nd</sup> August 1920 at the parish church of St Andrew, Lambeth he marries Rose Isabel Butlin.

Walter is 28, Rose is a young 19.

Then low and behold the following year 1921, a son Walter H James is born in December and Walter and Rose are shown living at 17 Jessel House Regency Street, Westminster until 1934.

Around this same time in 1921, Walter's mother is still shown living in Lambeth, She shows on the 1921 Electoral List:

By 1935 Walter and Rose were living near Westminster n 1934. Walter shows up on the 1934 Electoral List:

In 1935 Walter Henry is shown still at 13 Schomberg House but no Rose Isabel.
Up to 1939 only Walter is shown at the same address.
There is a recorded death of Rose I James in 1935 age 33 in the JQ 1935 registered at Chelsea 1a 431. Why she died at such a young age. This is lost to history.

In the meantime, Walter's service in WW1 was recognized as he qualified for the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal 1914-1919 and Victory Medals. These were made and sent out in the 1920's.

Since Walter's last know address at the time of shipping (March 12, 1921) was in Toronto (forwarding address before he left for the UK). They were eventually sent to his address in the UK in 1922 being shipped on Dec 2nd. These he put together with his DCM which he received while in France back in July 1916.

By 1939 WW2 has started and Walter is still at Schomberg House and with war with Germany having been declared in September appears to try and enlist again.

1940-1945 there were no Electoral Registers, so unsure where Walter may have gone or what he did.

Documentation between the Department of National Defence in Ottawa and England in March 1940 seems to suggest that Walter has made an attempt to join the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps. A.M.P. Corps was short for the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps. Walter was probably trying to enlist for service in WW2.

At 48 years of age he would have been too old in 1940 for a front line military unit and had made an application to join the AMP Corps who needed his military records.

Before I post the medals and Walter's picture, a bit of interesting information on some other family members was obtained during the research:

Lookign into what happened to Walter’s brother and sisters - Harry, Alfred and Minnie, in the hope they might reveal who the Clara E James was who was shown on the electoral rolls after WW2, possibly a wife of one of the brothers or a niece or cousin.

In the search through WW1 service records for both the brothers it was discovered that both had served in WW1. No service record has survived for Alfred (although he did serve) but Harry’s has survived. Harry James served with the East Surrey Regiment but was killed in action in October 1917. Before this he had enlisted in 1915 as 20 year old, but deserted in England on 25 October 1915, found guilty at a DCM and served time in prison before being posted abroad in June 1917.

Interestingly he was brought back from desertion to Kingston Barracks, where the East Surrey Regiment had a depot. The service papers also showed that when he enlisted in 1915 his mother Mary was living at 38 Hatfield Street and later in 1921 when the campaign medals were posted to his mother, Mary James and her daughter Minnie were shown living at 11 Doris Street, Kennington. The records also record that he was single, his father was deceased and his brother Alfred was serving in Mesopotamia with the BEF.
