    Congratulations on a great set. It's really nice when you know which "Hero" these awards belong to and you can research them.

    Although they are still with my father, my Great Grandfathers medals mean so much to me. Unfortunately he had them re-ribboned many years ago but they still look great.

        I didnt think I would find nice miniature set, I am tempted to pull the trigger on this one, dont want to hijack the thread, any thoughts on this set

          Not liking that combination myself.

          WWI service and DFM WWII, even at 16 in 1918 he would be a min of 37 by '39 well past it for flying operations.

          He would of have to a been a NCO first to get the DFM then an officer to get a DFC??


          As well the medals are very different in wear/age as well as an odd combination of stars Burma and AC EU not very common together

            Interesting, thanks, the first two in the row caught my eye, I did notice the brighter stars. I dont know enough about these

              Hello, sorry to open up this post again, but i was searching the internet whilst bored and decided to search for info on my grandad and came across this. My grandad was DS Radford (Dudley Spencer Radford) Anyway, probably of no interest to you now, but i had to write this anyway!!

                  nice to hear from a relative! but yes absolutely it would be why he got the coronation medal! having looked at ancestry i can only find him coming from South Africa in 51 to the UK! you could order his service records from the MOD here

                    While the unattributed group of mounted miniature medals in the opning post of this thread is a very fine looking contemporary combination of medals - it is defnitely NOT the miniatures ever owned or worn by Air Commodore Dudley Spencer Radford, D.S.O., D.F.C., A.F.C.

                    The portrait posted with this post is from my own collection

                    Circa 1956, the full combination of Radford's medals (he wears ribands for 10 awards - note not nine) are:

                    - DSO
                    - DFC
                    - AFC
                    - The 1939-1945 Star. No clasp
                    - The Air Crew Europe Star. With clasp
                    - The Africa Star
                    - Defence Medal
                    - War Medal
                    - Coronation Medal 1953
                    - Belgium: Order of Leopold II. IV Class 'Officers' breast badge (published in London Gazette issue of 27 August 1948)

                    The miniature medal group from the opening post has 9 x medals only with no Africa Star, the inclusion of an MID oakleaf on the War Medal (Radford did not have an MID) and no Foreign order

                    Air Commodore Radford was never entitled and never received any Indian Independence Medal

                      The portrait photograph in my post (above) - and list of awards are all dated to 1956.

                      On 1 January 1957 Air Commodore Radford was decorated with the Companion of the Order of the Bath (Military Division) at which time his rack of ribands would grow to 11, with the plain CB riband 'leading the line'

                        In other words, an officer is being permitted to wear an award he earned as a ranker. So, in fact, officers were still expected to be of good character and displaying crime free behaviour as a norm and did not need nor qualify for 'good conduct' engaged in while they held commissions.

                        I know an officer could be charged for 'conduct unbecoming an officer'. I believe that the ranker's equivalent would be 'conduct prejudicial to good order', which carries an entirely different moral flavour, IMHO.
